Kyle and Jackie O speak out after on-air 'hissy fit' and walk off

Kyle Sandilands and Jackie ‘O’ Henderson returned to the airwaves on Monday following a dramatic walkout in the middle of Friday morning’s show.

The radio duo furiously left the studio after learning that their live interview with former broadcaster Alan Jones was being heavily censored and ‘dumped’ from the air, leaving listeners extremely confused.

Speaking about the incident on Monday, Kyle acknowledged that he had become a bit “testy” recently and the event simply stemmed from miscommunication.

“Well, we’ve made it back. Look at that. Who would have thought?” he said during the show's opener.

“We left the show on Friday in a hissy fit. What happened was, there was some confusion between management and mixed signals, wishy-washy sort of back-end bulls**t… Who cares what a team of management thinks? I don’t care what they think.”

Kyle then complimented Jackie on her appearance at the Mediaweek annual Power lunch on Saturday, which saw the pair top the publication’s inaugural Star Power 25 list celebrating the country’s “25 most powerful talent on screen and on air”.

“How great did Jackie look after doing her ‘power move’ after we left the show on Friday in a hissy fit?” he said, before telling his co-host, “It was nice of you to support me for once and walk out together”.

“But I understood why you were doing it, because we were both very confused,” she responded.

While Kyle said that the situation is still not “smoothed over”, Jackie asserted that it is and the incident “wasn’t even that big a deal in the first place”.

What happened on their radio show?

On Friday morning Kyle and Jackie O were chatting with Alan Jones about luxury cars and expensive homes when the interview was suddenly cut off and listeners heard a pre-recorded alert.

The message explained that the broadcast had been ‘dumped’, meaning that “someone said something inappropriate and is currently getting in trouble”, and listeners then heard over 15 minutes of songs and ads.

Eventually, the pair returned to the air and expressed their confusion at the incident, which Jackie labelled as a “miscommunication”.

“I’ve spoken quickly to my lawyer because this is a very big situation,” Kyle said. “The communication, when it breaks down internally, anything can happen. So it's too dangerous for me. My lawyer said, ‘Pull yourself off the air until everyone’s singing from the same hymn book’.

“It's no good telling me and Jackie one thing and telling the staff -” he continued before he was once again censored.

Jackie added: “How were we ever going to know? Communication is key in these situations.”

The radio hosts finally said they were both turning off their microphones and going home early.
