Kristen Wiig's Aunt Linda “SNL” character was inspired by a confused woman watching “The Matrix” on a plane

"She had her headphones on and I could just hear her going, 'Whhhaaaaaaat?!'"

On her recent return to Studio 8H to host Saturday Night Live for a milestone fifth time, Kristen Wiig dusted off one of her fan favorite characters, cranky cinephile Aunt Linda.

Wiig sat down with Deadline to discuss the origins of some of her most memorable characters, though her most memorable anecdote involved good ole, Barbenheimer-hating Linda.

"That was based on a woman I was on an airplane with," Wiig said of the character. "They were showing The Matrix ...she was so confused. "She had no idea what was going on. She had her headphones on and I could just hear her going, 'Whhhaaaaaaatt??!'"

Wiig added, "I was literally writing down things she was saying. She was so mad and confused of what was going on. I was just like, 'Oh my god, I wish I could film this lady.'"

In that woman's defense, The Matrix was hella confusing. And has only gotten more so.

The Bridesmaids star/co-writer debuted Aunt Linda on a November 2006 episode of SNL and the character made six appearances during her run on the show (one of the best runs, TBH).

Wiig is currently starring in Palm Royale on Apple TV+ and knowing Aunt Linda...she's probably not a fan.
