Kmart's 5-in-1 Salad Maker sparks debate online: 'Makes my life easier!'
The budget retailer has divided shoppers with the handy kitchen appliance.
Budget retailer Kmart has brought back a popular kitchen item that has since divided consumers. The product in question is the 5-in-1 electric salad maker, which comes with five different slicing and grating cones for various vegetable chopping purposes, and is described by some as the “best thing ever”.
But others were less inclined to share their praise for the gadget. In an Australian Facebook group dedicated to sharing “their passion for Kmart and their products”, a group member posted a photo of the salad maker in its box on shelves and implored other members to share reviews of the product.
“I love mine, makes my life easy when I need to grate or slice a lot of things,” one user wrote under the post.
“Makes my kids want to help so it’s a yes from us,” another chimed in.

“I absolutely hate grating anything but this makes it easy,” said a third.
“My dad has one due to severe arthritis and he uses it all the time,” another shopper shared. “I’m about to get one myself.”
Veggie chopper praised for multipurpose benefits
There were also several reviews commending the product for being easy to clean. Another member even raved about the multipurpose benefits of the item – while marketed to chop veggies, some also use it to grate cheese or potatoes and shared their favourite kitchen hacks made possible by the appliance.
“I only use mine for grating cheese,” one commenter said. “I buy a 500g or 1kg block, grate it and then portion it into sandwich bags and freeze. You can then just pull out how much you need and let it sit on a plate or a paper towel for a few minutes to defrost. I don’t like all the additives they put in pre-grated cheese from the supermarket to stop it from sticking together. Freezing your own grated cheese is perfect and it doesn’t stick!”
'Awful' and 'cheap': Appliance divides shoppers
However, the post also sparked debate as members of the group shared their poor experiences with the 5-in-1 salad maker.
“I returned mine as I had to use a lot of pressure to get it to cut,” one user commented.
“I have arthritis so I found it hard … bought a Kmart processor instead,” another wrote, while a third member said that they hate having to “hold the power button down”.

“Awful,” a disgruntled consumer added. “The plastic ground into each other, it was so hard to get the coloured blade bits out I cut myself a few times and bits of carrot especially got caught, not properly grated.”
Some members also acknowledged its flaws while still recommending the appliance for what it was.
“Highly recommend for a cheap alternative,” an enthusiastic shopper said. “Cheaply made and will break but for the price, get it.”
The salad maker is available to purchase for $35.
