Kmart shopper gets a handle on 'gorgeous' buffet upcycle

Weekends are the perfect time to upcycle, and stores such as Kmart can really help keep costs down, while staying on trend.

One Queensland mum of three did just that and shared her results on the Kmart Hacks & Decor group on Facebook.

Sara had a simple description: "Handles Kmart; paint Dulux Misty Moss (previously a grey). Whitewash on top of the bench after sanding. Plant from Woolworths."

Followers loved the result, with well over 1,000 likes and 160 comments!

"Looks great! Love the handles," one person wrote.

"Love the colour. Looks beautiful," another added, while a third wrote: "Seriously ... some ladies are just so talented."

Sara answered questions about what she used to achieve her desired look.

"I whitewashed [the top] first, then put a clear over it. I sanded parts after whitewashing, so it wasn't too blocky, with steel wool, and wiped down ready for the clear varnish."

"I have the exact same buffet and hutch," another group member wrote.

"The paint colour looks gorgeous on this."

This is not Sara's first go at upcycling furniture.

"I often restore furniture, but haven't had the time of late, as I'm studying at uni full-time and working full-time," she told Yahoo Lifestyle.

However, after seeing a buffet she had not used for over a year, she decided to give it a glow-up.

"I needed to relocate the buffet, so I decided to give it a facelift," she said.

"I saw the colour on a friend's Facebook post.

"She had painted a wall in Misty Moss and I had a few greens in mind.

"Originally I was going to paint it an emerald green, but the lighter colour suited the handles better and I went for it.

"I knew I wanted to whitewash the top, as the pine had aged, and played around with that until I liked it and then sealed it with a satin clear."

She was happy with the results.

"It turned out even better than I expected, but I never expected so many likes and comments on my post," Sara said.

"It was a nice surprise and just affirmed what I liked was a good thing."

And Sara already has her next project planned.

"I enjoy doing it. I find it relaxing," she said.
