The King's Birthday has been celebrated since 1748, when King George II reigned. Later, King Edward VII moved the date to June due to the weather, as he hoped people would be able to enjoy the holiday during summer and not rainy November, when his actual birthday was.

Between 1788 and 1936, Australia celebrated the long weekend on the same day as the monarch's actual birthday, but then the government decided to follow the UK's lead and move it to mid-year so that all the public holidays were spaced out evenly.
