Kelsey Grammer reveals why he and “Cheers” costar Ted Danson didn't talk for 30 years

"It was at a time in my life when I was actually going through a lot of self-doubt, self-loathing, honestly," Grammer said. "It was when I was drinking a lot."

Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name and they're always glad you came. But sometimes an argument can lead to a 30-year unspoken issue, and Kelsey Grammer is now revealing the reason why he and Cheers costar Ted Danson didn't talk for three decades.

"It got a little blown out of proportion. There really wasn’t an argument," Grammer told the NYPost. "It was at a time in my life when I was actually going through a lot of self-doubt, self-loathing, honestly. It was when I was drinking a lot."

Grammer explained that Danson had approached him with a grievance, and that essentially ended their friendship — although he didn't realize it at the time. "Ted had just come up and said, 'You know, I’m kind of mad at you that sometimes you don’t show up ready to go,'" Grammer said. "And I said, 'Okay, I respect that.' And that actually was sort of it."

According to Grammer, he thought that exchange ended whatever issue they had. But it turned into a 30-year silence on Danson's part. "Now, maybe what happened for Ted was he stepped away from what might have been a better friendship," Grammer said. "Maybe he just had to protect himself. I don’t really know. But, I said, 'Thanks.' We were fine with that."

Grammer and Danson starred together on the legendary sitcom for years after Grammer joined the series in season 3 as a recurring character. Grammer was promoted to the main cast in season 5, where he remained until Cheers came to a close six seasons later in 1993 (and his character Frasier Crane would go on to lead the eponymous spinoff series Frasier, including the recent revival that debuted last year and released its second season just last month on Paramount+).

Danson, who starred as Sam Malone throughout the entire run of Cheers, personally apologized to Grammer for their argument — and how it affected their friendship moving forward — during a recent episode of Sirius XM's Where Everybody Knows Your Name podcast.

"I feel like I got stuck a little bit with you during the Cheers years," Danson said on the October 2024 episode. "I have a memory of getting angry at you once and it stuck in both of our memories, but I feel like... F---, I don’t know, I missed out on the last 30 years of Kelsey Grammer."

Danson recalled that he was at fault for the argument, and, as a result, their 30-year silence. "I feel like it’s my bad, my doing, and I almost feel like apologizing to you," he confessed. "No, I don’t feel like, I apologize to you and me that I sat back and didn’t, and I really do apologize."

Grammer accepted Danson’s apology without hesitation. "Thank you," he replied. "I wish we’d spent some more time together."
