During the Friday, Jan. 17 episode of her talk show with husband Mark Consuelos, Ripa was visibly distraught while discussing what it's like to care for a senior dog, as she and Consuelos are currently parents to an 18-year-old dog named Chewie.
"That's old. She's almost 18," Consuelos, 53, said, while checking in on his wife, and asking "You okay?" during the conversation.
"She's the best dog," Ripa, 54, said, her voice breaking. "And she came to us at a time when we had three young kids. I always said she was like my fourth kid but I treated her like a dog."
Ripa and Consuelos, who have been married since 1996, are parents to three kids together: Michael, 27, Lola, 23, and Joaquin, 21.
"Now I'm like questioning everything," Ripa explained. "I'm like, 'Was I nice enough to her as a puppy?' because you know I had kids and I was trying to raise these kids."
"It's very difficult," she added, before quipping, "She's an old broad, I'm an old broad."
"There's people that are like, 'You'll know when the time is right,' and then also the other group that are saying, 'You don't really know when the right time is. You just have to hope for the best, and there really is not a wrong time when your dog has lived a full life."
After wiping away tears, Ripa said "I'm so sorry" to the audience, adding, "I apologize for my small breakdown."
But fans were more than understanding of Ripa's position, as tons of users in the comments on Instagram chimed in to share their support.
"Aw this is the most real conversation... And I'm right there with you. It's one of the hardest things to figure out and deal with 💔💔💔," one follower wrote.
Another added, "I think we all cried with you! Don’t be sorry! Pets are our babies♥️🙏."
