Kelly Monaco Bids Tearful Goodbye to General Hospital After 21 Years — Watch Behind-the-Scenes Video

General Hospital fans, get ready to mourn the loss of Sam McCall all over again.

Two weeks after Kelly Monaco’s beloved General Hospital character was killed off the ABC soap, a behind-the-scenes video of the actress’ series wrap has surfaced — and the emotions are heavy.

“I’ve been on this lot for 25 years, and you have all been my family — not only my second family but my first family,” Monaco says to the cast and crew in attendance for her final scene. “I just thank each and every one of you for these memories and this experience that I’ll take with me for the rest of my life. … It has been a wild ride, and it will not be the last that you see of me.”

Though Monaco’s final episode was filmed in advance, Sam’s death occurred on General Hospital‘s Oct. 30 episode. News of Monaco’s impending exit broke in August, with the actress reportedly “blindsided” by the show’s decision to kill off her character. It wasn’t immediately clear how Sam was going to meet her untimely end, but the writing was on the wall as soon as she agreed to donate her liver to Lulu Spencer.

General Hospital fans first met Sam on Oct. 1, 2003, having previously seen Monaco as Livvie Locke on the short-lived General Hospital spinoff Port Charles. Lindsay Hartley briefly filled in for Monaco in 2020, 2022 and 2024.

Monaco’s work on General Hospital earned her a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2006. She was previously nominated in the supporting category in 2003 for playing Livvie on Port Charles.
