Having kicked off her acting career on Home and Away at the age of eight, Kate Ritchie was forced to grow up very quickly in the public eye.
And with that came some challenges for the then-rising star, one being strangers openly commenting on her changing body, especially during puberty.
“Well I have to admit it was pretty awful at times, but I think after 30 years I’m so used to people commenting on my body,” the 40-year-old said during an interview on The Project last night.
“I’m sure this isn’t too crass, but I kind of grew overnight and I’ve had people since then, I go and buy sausages at the butcher or I go to the hairdresser and people tell me they remember the day when Sally Fletcher grew breasts,” she added.
Female hosts Carrie Bickmore and Fifi Box in particular were quite shocked by the actress’ admission.
Kate said over the years she’s learned not to let the critics get to her.
“The self-consciousness I’m detached from,” she said, before adding, “but I do think that it has affected me in some ways.”
Kate scored her big acting role on Home and Away as the iconic Sally Fletcher back in 1987.
She appeared on the popular Australian soap for two decades till 2008, before making a brief appearance in 2013.
She also shares four-year-old daughter Mae with husband Stuart Webb.
