Kate Middleton has stepped back from her royal duties while receiving preventative cancer treatment — however, she's still taking time to mark important milestones with her family. Her daughter, Princess Charlotte, turns nine today and the Princess of Wales released an adorable portrait of her daughter to mark the occasion.

The photo was posted on the family's official Instagram account alongside the caption, "Happy 9th Birthday, Princess Charlotte! Thank you for all of the kind messages today." In the photo, Charlotte grins up at the camera wearing a berry red cardigan over a navy sweater and a jean skirt, her arm resting casually on a leafy hedge.

Back in 2017, Kate allegedly described her only daughter as "the one in charge". “She said that Charlotte is growing up really fast," said Samantha Burge, wife of Warrant Officer Class 2 Chris Burge, told reporters.said Samantha Burge, wife of Warrant Officer Class 2 Chris Burge to People after she met Kate at an event. "She is the one in charge,”

Kate, who is known to be an avid amateur photographer, posted another birthday portrait on Instagram in honor of Louis's sixth birthday last month. This portrait had an almost identical message, reading, "Happy 6th Birthday, Prince Louis! Thank you for all the kind wishes today."

Kate's portrait of Charlotte comes amid her on-going cancer treatment. In a video released on March 22, Kate asked for privacy for her the sake of her young family. "It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be okay," she said. "As I’ve said to them, I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal in my mind, body, and spirits."
