John Amos' Daughter Says She 'Should Have Had the Chance to Say Goodbye' After She Learned of His Death in the News
Shannon Amos is still grappling with the news of her father's death in August after she learned of it through the media last week
Shannon Amos is continuing to speak out about her father John Amos' death after she revealed she found out he died with the rest of the world.
On Oct. 1, John's son Kelly Christopher "K.C." Amos said in a statement shared with PEOPLE that the TV icon had died of natural causes in L.A. on Aug. 21. Thereafter, Shannon, 58, said in a post on Instagram that she found out about John's death "through the media."
Shannon said she was "without words" after hearing the "heartbreaking news," and in a post on Oct. 6, she further reflected on how she and her family are doing amidst the loss.
"Our family—a daughter, a brother, nieces, grandchildren, cousins, and extended family should have had the chance to say goodbye, to be present, to lay our healing hands on him, to light our beloved patriarch’s path as he ascended. To bear witness and hold space," she wrote.

"You spoke to me in my dreams just before you departed and I lit a candle for you on my altar to light your path," Shannon continued in her post. "I asked family to do the same. I prayed and asked the ancestors to hold you, as I made an offering to Yemayah to cleanse your soul. You are free now my beloved Daddy. You are free."
In her lengthy caption, Shannon also wrote that "no one should leave this life without those dearest by their side" as she said, "The two greatest gifts in this life are to witness the birth of a new soul entering this world and to hold the sacred space of love as a soul prepares to depart."
Shannon's latest post following the Roots actor's death comes after his longtime publicist Belinda Foster said in a statement to PEOPLE, "At the time of his death, John was concerned that Shannon might turn his death and interment into a circus as she had done with other aspects of his life."
"It was John who requested the delay in announcing his death to Shannon and the rest of the world," Foster said.
She also noted that K.C. "was under a strict no-contact order from the Superior Court of New Jersey based on the Complaint that his sister Shannon brought against him in 2023," so he is "precluded from making any contact with Shannon directly or indirectly by phone, social media or any method of communication."

Foster's statement came after John's "collective family and close friends," including Shannon and his goddaughter Amy Goudy, issued a statement on Facebook regarding the circumstances of the actor's death, as they expressed suspicion that he "was likely cremated to avoid any potential investigation into the conditions surrounding his final days."
The family also expressed concern that John "may have been neglected and isolated during his final days," as they accused K.C., Foster and Eugene Brummet of having "isolated the actor from his loved ones despite their repeated attempts to make contact."
Foster shut down those claims as she said, "Shannon's claims that John was abused are false. K.C., Eugene and I, along with numerous others cared for him. On several occasions when Shannon claimed that he was abused, law enforcement authorities sat with John and confirmed his well being."

Shannon and John's relationship had its ups and downs, as he accused her of elder abuse but told PEOPLE in one of his final interviews before he died, "We are still family, and we love each other and that's the bottom line."
"It is [K.C.'s] sibling, that is my daughter, my first child. I love her. K.C. loves his sister. We just have, I guess, what might be best described in the tabloids is an acrimonious relationship, but everything heals in time, and the love is still there," John said in December 2023.
