Jennifer Lopez Got Vulnerable About Being a Mom "Who Struggles" Amid Ben Affleck Split
"You always want to put your best foot forward for your kids."
Jennifer Lopez is getting vulnerable about the struggle of working through her personal battles while also prioritizing her kids. As the multi-hyphenate navigates a public split from ex-husband Ben Affleck, she opened up about motherhood and “being a human being who struggles” in a new video interview with British Vogue released on December 20.
The Unstoppable actress, who plays champion wrestler Anthony Robles’s mom in the film, opened up about what parenthood has looked like for her during the intimate chat with the real-life Judy Robles. Lopez laughed as she summed up the experience being a mom to 16-year-old twins Emme and Max as a “beautiful, challenging, blessing.”
Calling being a parent “the hardest job that anyone could ever have,” Lopez opened up about the similarities between her and her role as Robles. She said the part she resonated with the most was “wanting to put forward the best face for [your kids] all the time, but also be struggling as a woman and in relationships and in life, with your own dreams and aspirations.”
She continued, “I understood it. I mean, as a mom, you always want to put your best foot forward for your kids. You want to lift them up. That doesn’t stop you from being a human being who struggles."
Later in the interview, Lopez also touched on relating to the character as Robles opened up about struggling to watch herself give her abusive ex-husband another chance, and how that impacted her son. “I’ve been in the same spot, like maybe I shouldn’t be giving this person another chance, and then you go back,” the Marry Me actress shared. “I don’t think there’s a woman on earth who hasn’t been in this position, or even man.”
Lopez previously opened up about questioning her self-worth when she was parenting her kids alone, and how her latest role helped heal that part of her.
"I've been a single mom at times in my life, and [I've asked], 'Am I enough for them?'” the “On the Floor” singer, who shares her children with ex-husband Marc Anthony, recently told Entertainment Weekly. However, after seeing what Anthony Robles was able to accomplish with the support of his mom, her mindset changed.
"And the truth is, all you need is really one good parent to love you," she added. "You hear it in Anthony's voice, and look what he's been able to accomplish. That's what the movie gave me: You are enough."
