Jenna Bush Hager Shares Why Husband Henry Hager Didn’t Believe Her Water Broke with Daughter Mila

As Jenna Bush Hager explained during a recent segment of Today with Jenna & Friends, her oldest child with husband Henry Hager arrived far enough ahead of her due date that Hager didn’t quite believe it when it was happening.

The former first daughter shared the memory while chatting with her guest co-host, Saturday Night Live star Ego Nwodim, last week. Bush Hager’s show later shared a clip from their conversation on Instagram on Feb. 15.

“On the day my first child was born, she was very early,” Bush Hager began. When the mom of three started to explain that she had attended a SoulCycle class before her water broke back in April 2013, before the birth of her daughter Mila, people in her show’s live audience gasped audibly.

“She was very early!” Bush Hager, 43, said before reprimanding her audience. “Don’t gasp at me.”

Nwodim, 36, stepped in to clarify the timeline. “But you were nine months pregnant?”

“I was eight-and-a-half,” Bush Hager explained. “[Mila] came at like 35-and-a-half weeks or something.”

Bush Hager then revealed where she was when she realized that Mila was about to arrive. “It was at my baby shower that my water broke,” she said.

“Oh my gosh!” Nwodim exclaimed.

Bush Hager recalled that her twin sister, Barbara, made contact with Hager to relay the news—but he didn’t believe them.

"Barbara called Henry to tell him that I was going to the hospital,” she said. “And he was like, ‘Those sisters have played pranks on me. I’m not falling for it.’”

Luckily, Bush Hager’s friend Kerri, who now works as a producer on the show, was there at the time. Kerri’s husband helped convince Hager that he really was about to become a father.

“So he trusts Kerri more than you,” Nwodim said.

“He did,” Bush Hager confirmed. “And I basically trust Kerri more than I trust myself.”
