Jane Lynch Says It's 'a Lot of Fun' Getting to Mirror Steve Martin on OMITB: 'I Have to Stay on My Toes' (Exclusive)

Only Murders in the Building is back!

On Thursday, Aug. 22, Steve Martin, Selena Gomez and Martin Short joined their fellow castmates on the hit Hulu series, including Jane Lynch, at the Paramount Lot for the show's season 4 red carpet premiere in Los Angeles.

While there, Lynch spoke to PEOPLE exclusively about working closely alongside Martin, 79, as she continues to play the stunt double to his character Charles.

"Well, the great thing about it is when we do a rehearsal for the scene, I just watch what he does and when he does this, when he does that, and if he changes it up, I have to stay on my toes," Lynch, who plays Sazz, said. "But usually, he'll set it so that I can mirror it. So that's always a lot of fun. We don't kill that gimmick, that old chestnut, but we do it every once in a while and I think it's to great effect."

Asked about whether she gets nervous mirroring Martin, the 64-year-old Glee alum said: "No. I really don't do Steve or Charles. Sazz doesn't really do Charles. Sazz is just Sazz. She does herself."

"But when she's doing a stunt, and you'll see some this season, where he'll freeze and I tap him and I go, 'Tap in' and I assume his position," she added. "So all that, I'll imitate him and then I do the dangerous part and he has a cappuccino."

Another one of Martin's costars who enjoys working alongside him (and Short) is Gomez, who told PEOPLE at the event: "It's honestly a joy to wake up every day and go on set with two professionals."

"We have so much fun," the Rare Beauty mogul, 32, added.

"Yeah, we do. It's a great, great job," Martin chimed in, agreeing with Gomez. "And to be able to go to work and have fun and anticipate it – and know that there's an end... And Marty's been a friend for 45 years."

The highly anticipated fourth installment will follow Charles-Hayden Savage (Martin), Mabel Mora (Gomez) and Oliver Putnam (Short) searching for clues to solve Sazz Pataki's (Lynch) murder and determine who killed her. While the trio will put their nose to the grindstone to uncover the murder of their friend, their journey will also lead them to Hollywood when a studio offers to take their podcast to the big screen.

Fans learned that Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria will be playing heightened versions of themselves and take on the roles of Charles, Oliver and Mabel in the movie adaptation of the podcast.

In a behind-the-scenes photo shared with PEOPLE in June, the original trio and their Hollywood counterparts were seen smiling and standing side-by-side in identical outfits.

Longoria, Levy and Galifianakis aren't the only new faces joining this season's cast.

In February 2024, Deadline reported that Molly Shannon would be playing “a high powered LA business woman who finds herself drawn into the world of the investigation in NY.”

Kumail Nanjiani, Richard Kind and Melissa McCarthy will also be making appearances and previous cast members Lynch, Meryl Streep, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Michael Cyril Creighton will also return.
