Jamie Lee Curtis' Husband Christopher Guest Called Her to Ask, 'Do You Like Diamonds?' Before Proposing
Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest are preparing to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary on Dec. 18
Jamie Lee Curtis is sharing the beginnings of her and Christopher Guest's love story.
When Curtis, 66, appeared on the Monday, Dec. 2 episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, she and Jimmy Kimmel noted that Curtis and her husband Guest, 76, are approaching their 40th wedding anniversary on Dec. 18. After Kimmel asked Curtis to share how Guest proposed to her, she began recounting that they met after she saw his photo in a magazine.
"I called his agent and left my number, he never called me. We ran into each other in a restaurant, he kind of went like this [waves], I went like this [waves], he called me the next day. We went out," she said, noting that their relationship progressed quickly. Curtis even shared that she just recently "found the receipt of when he went into Cartier to buy this very ring on my finger."
"He was shooting SNL in New York and I was shooting the movie Perfect. I was on something called a payphone where you put quarters in and I remember we were speaking and I said, 'What did you do today?' " she added. Guest told her he "went for a walk" around the city and added that he visited a Cartier store on Fifth Avenue.
"And then in typical boy fashion, 'Do you like diamonds?' Now, I'm telling the truth. So then he came out to Los Angeles and... Well, he proposed in a more private and intimate way," Curtis said.

Curtis marked the 40th anniversary of her first date with Guest in an Instagram post she shared back on July 2. Years ago, she recalled the same story about Guest buying her a ring in September 1984 in a personal essay she wrote for Oprah.com, recalling that the pair went from first date to marriage in just six months.

"You know what, he's just that guy," Curtis told Kimmel, when asked if Guest thought he "was being coy" when he asked Curtis if she liked diamonds. "He literally walked in and the woman behind the counter was like, 'Hi, can I help you?' And he goes, 'Yeah, I need a ring,' and he goes, 'That one,' and she goes, 'What size?' And he goes, 'That one.' "
Curtis and Guest, who rarely step out in public together, share two adult daughters, Annie and Ruby. While Curtis told Kimmel she and Guest do not have any major plans to celebrate their 40th anniversary, she said the couple traveled down the Missouri River for four days "re-tracing" famous explorers Lewis and Clark's path through the region in the early 1800s.
"Chance encounter. Life hinging. Children growing," Curtis wrote in her July Instagram caption commemorating her and Guest's first date. "LOVE IS LOVE!"
