Jack Quaid is used to getting beat up onscreen.

After playing his super punching bag, Hughie, on The Boys for four seasons, he thought nothing would surprise him. But there was one stunt in Companion, his new twisty romantic thriller costarring Sophie Thatcher (Heretic), that was too much, even for him.

"Oh, boy, there are so many wild moments in this movie," Quaid tells Entertainment Weekly. "But there was this one stunt that is small in the grand history of things I've done on screen, but I don't know why; it just gave me the heebie-jeebies."

Writer-director Drew Hancock's buzzy film follows Iris (Thatcher) as she discovers she's actually a robot owned and programmed by her selfish, entitled boyfriend Josh (Quaid). A weekend away at a cabin in the woods turns into a literal fight for survival as Iris battles Josh, his scheming friend Kat (Megan Suri), and their self-centered friends (Harvey Guillén and Lukas Gage) for control over her life. And the "ultimate cringe" moment that Quaid is referring to happens about midway through the movie, and is featured in the trailer.

"She closes a car door on my hand, and it was the one stunt where I was like, 'I don't know...,'" Quaid says. "It was perfectly safe — they had a stopper there in case anything went wrong. But it was the one time I was like, 'Can we please just have a stunt double do it?'"

The actor laughs as he admits that he's "done crazier things" in his career. "But something about that, I couldn't do it," he adds. "I think it's [because] I've had a door closed on my hand before, and it just brought up old memories, and I'm like, 'I don't know if I can do this.' For some reason, that's where I drew my line. I don't know why, but that was it."

But Quaid applauds his costar, Thatcher, for having to do even more brutal and bloody stunts throughout the movie as Iris awakens to the truth about her life and relationship with Josh, giving new meaning to the phrase "love hurts."

"This is also in the trailer; there's a dinner table confrontation towards the end of the movie, and we light her hand on fire," he says. "That was just absolutely crazy. I mean, definitely crazier for Sophie than it was for me, and obviously that's not her real hand, but it was crazy to see that finally put together with VFX and everything. That was just nuts."

Companion is now playing in theaters.
