Italian Is No Longer The Most Popular Cuisine In The World
Slurping pasta is so last year. TasteAtlas, the online travel guide for traditional local food, has just released their 2024-25 awards and according to their data, Greek cuisine ranks as the absolute best, kicking Italy out of the top spot. Based on a whopping 477,287 ratings by users for over 15,478 cuisines, Greek food earned the highest average scores, beating out Italian, Mexican, Japanese, and even French (c'est la vie). But let's face it—we can't blame the masses for coveting Greek cuisine. From cheese to olive oil to fruit, the European country produces some of the tastiest items we import here in the US.
Plus, since Greece comprises islands, there are plenty of different regional cuisines to sample and enjoy. So it comes as little surprise that four out of TasteAtlas's top ten food regions are located in Greece, as well— namely, Peloponnese, Cyclades, Crete, and Macedonia. Among the most highly rated restaurants in the country are To Antikristo in Crete, Taverna Vasilas Vasileios on the mainland, and Taverna Ninos in Corfu, TasteAtlas reports.
Also featured in the guide's awards are Greece's top gourmet food producers, which is a great way for non-locals to get a taste of local flavor. For example, Aphrodite took home the top spot as the best honey producer in the world, while Kidonakis Bros was rated as one of the top olive oil producers worldwide—both of which you can order online.
TasteAtlas, which describes itself as an "encyclopedia of flavors," sticks true to its word, garnering user reviews of popular food and drink products, dishes, and restaurants across the globe. Using these insights, the online guide determines the yearly award winners.
However, even though Greek cuisine scored the crown this year, it didn't exactly blow its competition out of the water. While its average overall rating was 4.6 stars, the runner-up, Italian cuisine, was just a smidge behind at 4.59. After Italian cuisine, Mexican, Spanish, Portuguese, Turkish, Indonesian, French, Japanese, and Chinese cuisine rounded out the top ten. In fact, according to the guide's best food cities, nary a Greek city made the list of top ten—the top three spots went to Naples, Milan, and Bologna. So while Greece may in fact have done it best this year, the runners-up are hot on its tail.
