Yahoo Lifestyle Ilona Maher Fans Call Her a 'Girl's Girl': 'Women Supporting Women'
Ilona Maher’s fans are applauding the rugby star for her dedication to supporting other women no matter what.
The 28-year-old two-time Olympian shared a video online showing one such way she recently demonstrated her support. The video featured a handful of spliced-together clips of Maher as she watched a cheerleading team perform a routine to Lady Gaga’s “Telephone.”
Though Maher was dressed for chilly temperatures, the cold weather didn’t stop her from enthusiastically clapping along to the song’s tempo and dancing as she waved her arms to urge on the athletes.
“One thing about me: I’m going to support women,” the Dancing with the Stars alum wrote in a text overlay included with the video, which she posted on Instagram on Saturday, Jan. 25. She doubled down on her promise in her caption, writing, “Don’t matter what they are doing, I will be cheering for them.”
Fans applauded the Olympic bronze medalist’s display of support in the post’s comment section, with one declaring her “the hero of positivity we need right now.”
Maher is “THE girls girl,” one fan gushed as another praised the video, writing, “Women supporting women 👏😍❤️.”
“Yesss let me introduce you to my sport…competition cheerleading!! Women supporting women!!” another fan echoed.
“It’s why you’re the GOAT!” an Instagram user wrote while another told Maher, “You are a wonderful role model!!”
One fan wrote in to share that they were touched by Maher’s video as they reflected on their own experience as an athlete. “As a girl who played soccer and basketball and then cheered in college, I’m here for this! The world needs more of this energy 🔥❤️👏👏,” they wrote.
Another athlete wished they could personally experience Maher’s show of support. “I need her to come to my next race and yell for me to pedal/run faster,” they wrote.
