Idina Menzel and Taye Diggs have been very intentional about keeping their son, Walker Nathaniel, out of the public eye—but for the November 9 Los Angeles premiere of Wicked, the teenager decided to make a rare appearance to join his mom for the red carpet and support her connection to the franchise.

For the occasion, Menzel stepped out in a fitted black one shoulder gown that acted as a subtle nod to the character Elphaba, who she played in the Broadway rendition of Wicked. Walker, meanwhile, matched his mother in an all black ensemble of his own, wearing a black suit with a black button-up shirt underneath the jacket. For a youthful touch, the teen added black sneakers by A Bathing Ape, that features white soles and the brand's signature shooting star logo.

Elsewhere during the event, Menzel posed for photos alongside Wicked movie stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, and reunited with her former Wicked Broadway co-star Kristin Chenoweth, who performed opposite her as Glinda, the Good Witch.

In June, Menzel gushed about Walker while speaking with People, noting that navigating parenthood during the teen years can be difficult and surprising at times. "He’s great. He’s a teenager, but he still hugs me once in a while so I’ll take that," she said.

"What surprises me is just how mercurial it is, one minute they want nothing to do with you, and the next minute they really show you how much they need you," she continued. "You really have to be on your toes and be willing to get out of their way and out of your own way and not take things too personally. Know that they feel your love but they also need their space."

Menzel and Diggs welcomed Walker—their only child—in 2008 after six years of marriage, before splitting in 2013. On the subject of co-parenting, Diggs previously told People that maintaining their son's happiness will always be his and Menzel’s “main objective.”

“He’s what’s most important for us, so we’re still there as a family,” Diggs explained, and said that he and Menzel "were friends to start out with, but especially when you have a kid in the mix, there’s no time for any negativity.”
