Homeowners' stunning discovery after tearing up carpet

Homeowners have made a surprising discovery after tearing up the carpet while renovating.

A man posted on Reddit of a photo of the room after the carpet had been ripped up, revealing a giant Monopoly board underneath.

"While tearing up their carpet, my in-laws found a giant Monopoly board," the man said.

Many were stunned by the secret Monopoly board, while others explained the reason behind the find.

"My childhood home, which was built in the 60s, had a shuffleboard game tiled into our basement floor," one commented.

"My parents were the first owners, but I don't know if it was an option from the builder or if they did it on their own.

"I remember my mum often complaining that she wished she had gotten the laundry chute option, so I'm pretty sure they could select certain things from the builder."

Other stories of giant game boards in private homes

Another said their grandparents also had a shuffleboard tiled into the floor while another said it used to be a common trend in playrooms.

"Showed this to my wife, and she reminded me that there's a whole neighbourhood near us, built in the mid-50s, that has game boards painted or tiled onto their basement floors," one said.

"Seems to have been a selling point or something."

Another commented they always wanted a giant game board in their house when they were younger.

"I must have begged almost every day, just longing to be able to finally get one of these. I don't know why – I didn't even like Monopoly, but the gimmick of it just seemed ... cool," they said.

Some suggested the man's in-laws needed a giant set of dice while another agreed they would also need oversized Monopoly money.

The son-in-law who posted the photo of the Monopoly board said he was trying to convince the homeowners to keep the surprising feature.

"Trying to convince them to cover it in epoxy and do the rest of the flooring around it how they originally wanted," he said.

The find comes just months after another woman tearing up her carpet discovered a secret basement hidden under the floor.

The US-based woman bought the home about a year ago from a couple she claimed were in a rush to move out.

In a series of TikTok videos the woman lifts up carpet and layers of padding to reveal a rusty handle in the floor.

In one of the videos she admitted she was terrified of going into the basement alone.

“I’m not going to go down there, I’m pretty afraid, it’s very unsettling,” she said.
