Storyline Home and Away's Lynne McGranger wishes she'd said no to: 'I just lost it'

She’s played Irene Roberts on the iconic Australian soap Home and Away for the past 29 years and now Lynne McGranger has revealed the one storyline she wishes she’d never said yes to.

In an interview with TV Week, Lynne revealed that in 1996, when her now 31-year-old daughter Clancy was just five -years-old, she suffered a miscarriage.

It just happened to coincide with a storyline on Home and Away, where Irene announced to the Bay that she was pregnant.

"I remember the scene quite clearly. Irene was showing off the photos of the baby in utero - I just lost it," she said.

"I had been given the option [not to do the storyline], but I said I would. And deep down, I was people-pleasing. I thought, 'what's easier for them?' If I had my time over, I'd say no."

"The second time around, I was older and maybe because I didn't realise I was pregnant for the first few weeks, I didn't look after myself as well as I would have if I'd known.”

Lynne continued: "Who knows why these things happen? But it did and I got through it."

The legendary Australian actress recently released her memoir, called Acting Up: Me, Myself & Irene, where according to news.com.au, she revealed how much of a shock it came to her when WSFM’s Jonesy and Amanda revealed she was once nearly written out of the show.

"After decades of answering questions like, 'How does it feel to be the longest-running female cast member?' and 'Do you still love being on the show?' I knew this little chat could be had in my sleep. I think I might have been simultaneously cooking brekky while I chatted."

According to Lynne, "completely out of the blue” Jonesy asked her: "It's amazing to think that they nearly wrote you out in 2002."

“I’m sorry, what?” Lynne responded, to which Jonesy said: “Yeah, it’s on Wikipedia.”

That of course never happened and Irene is still one of the longest-serving members of the cast.

The 68-year-old also opened up about her former marijuana use, admitting that she used to grow the drug in her own backyard.

"It will be totally scandalous and it was not a bit [of marijuana]. I smoked a lot of dope," she revealed. "I just loved it. I would smoke joints."

Before she quit smoking both marijuana and cigarettes in 2005, Lynne says she acted in theatre productions while under the influence.

"I have done theatre stuff stoned, but not Home and Away. I didn't drink you see, so that was my wine."

Lynne also spoke about the eating disorder she experienced from the ages of 15 to 28, decades before she joined the Home and Away cast in 1993.

"I now know that it was a form of bulimia but there was no name for it back then," she said.
