Isla Fisher spills on her Home and Away return: ‘I’ve thought about it’
Isla Fisher has starred in a number of iconic Hollywood productions throughout her career, including The Great Gatsby, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Now You See Me, but she will always be remembered fondly for her humble beginnings on Home and Away.
The Australian actress, who stars in the new Netflix film Back to the Outback, played Shannon Reed in the long-running soap opera from 1994 to 1997.
Chatting with Yahoo Lifestyle, Isla spoke about a potential return to Summer Bay and whether she has ever considered making a cameo appearance.
“Of course I’ve thought about it!” she admitted.
“I've thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be hilarious?’ But then the reality of it is, obviously, you have to give lots of notice and then it gets written in and then you have to commit.
“But obviously it would be fun just to sort of like, walk by with a surfboard or something at some point.”
‘I could just sort of let my freak flag fly’
While Isla has now spent a large part of her career post-Home and Away performing with an American accent, her latest project has allowed her to embrace her roots Down Under.
Back to the Outback is an animated film about a group of Australia’s deadliest creatures plotting an escape from the zoo, with Isla playing a taipan named Maddie who has a heart of gold.
“It was so much fun because I could improvise without having to sort of filter it through another dialect, so I could just sort of let my freak flag fly in a way that I hadn't been able to for years,” she detailed.

Isla also explained what it was like portraying a character who goes on a journey of self-discovery and self-empowerment through her voice acting.
“Vocally, I just wanted to sort of have a bit of a development and richness to her voice as she grew in maturity and as she sort of developed leadership skills,” she said.
“I didn't need to put on a silly accent like I have done in the past.”
‘Every moment was divine’
The Godmothered actress went on to detail what it was like making the movie in Australia, where she was in her own ‘bubble’ away from her husband, Sacha Baron Cohen, who was filming Borat 2.
“We did it during lockdown so I was able to put on some sweatpants and head up to my closet which was ‘work’ and record this fun character,” she laughed.
“Claire Knight and Harry Cripps, our directors and writer, they were just so open to any ideas I had as Maddie and they created such a safe space to play around. I just loved every minute of working with them.”
Speaking about her iconic filmography and all of the wonderful people she’s been able to work with, Isla says that there is one project that definitely stands out.
“I will always say that for me, The Great Gatsby was just such a special experience,” she said.
“Not just to work with Baz Luhrmann, who I'd admired from everything he's ever done, but I think just, you know, building Long Island the way we did in Sydney and just the sets and the scope and the scale and the character.
“That character, Myrtle, was just so different from anyone I've ever played and I got to do so much research. It just was delicious, every moment was divine.”
Back to the Outback is now streaming on Netflix.
