Holy Modernism Week! Adam West’s Former Palm Springs Home Has Been Transformed Into a Contemporary Bat Cave
Palm Springs is one of the most coveted architecture hubs in the United States, with one of the country’s highest concentrations of midcentury-modern structures, and the city’s popular Modernism Week, which began in 2006 and this year runs from February 13 to 23, celebrates the area’s famous midcentury modern architecture, art, and design. The festival features more than 500 presentations and films, along with home tours of some of the area’s most notable residences, while highlighting key architects and historical context.
The featured home tour this year is the West House, the former home of actor Adam West, best known for his role as Batman in the 1960s TV series Batman. Located in the Old Las Palmas neighborhood, it was originally built in 1954 and later renovated by renowned modernist architect Albert Frey with several modernist design features.

For Modernism Week, the almost 3,200-square-foot residence underwent a total interior renovation by Palm Springs-based designer Michelle Boudreau, founder of Michelle Boudreau Design. Boudreau and her team paid homage to Frey’s modernist design elements while adding playful nods to the Batman legacy. Dubbed the ‘Bat Cave,’ Boudreau collaborated with luxury home staging company Vesta Home to customize key pieces for each room.
The interiors feature sleek curves of the ‘Bat Cave’ paired alongside modern forms, textured marble, warm hues, and steel black accents that reference Batman’s signature black edge. Upon entering, there is a Batman logo at the door as well as a soothing water feature that sets the tone for the inspiration behind the house. The ranch-style home features several bright communal areas thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass sliding doors and windows that overlook the San Jacinto Mountains, pool, palm tees, and lush landscaping.
Inside, light oak wood-paneled walls bring a sense of midcentury-modern flair with a more contemporary touch. The heart of the home is the living room, with fluted wall accents and sculptural lounge chairs upholstered in a midcentury-modern fabric. Here there’s also a floor-to-ceiling gas fireplace. Off the living room is the warm dining room, which has bold, printed upholstered chairs, and a window connecting to the kitchen. The kitchen has also been heavily updated with state-of-the-art appliances, custom oak wood cabinetry, and a curved kitchen island with black barstools designed to look like chess pieces. The kitchen also has sliding doors that open to the back.
The bedrooms are reminiscent of 1960s and 1970s glamor, with curved bedframes, geometric accent tables and light fixtures, and built-in storage. Other rooms feature bold patterns and a mixture of textures. Finally, there’s a chic, naturally lit bar area with a sleek black bar and a record console. Outside near the pool there is a small pool house with an airy living space. The home will be available for tours until February 23.
