Hilarie Burton says “One Tree Hill ”sequel series will be told through 'a female lens'
"I'm excited to be able to team up with people that I look up to, people that I love dearly," Burton said of her costars Sophia Bush and Danneel Ackles.
Hilarie Burton Morgan says making the One Tree Hill sequel series is already vastly different from filming the original.
The actress, who is teaming up with fellow Tree Hill High alum Sophia Bush to produce and star in the reboot, recently teased the show’s future to PEOPLE, opening up about the behind-the-scenes experience of centering on a female narrative.
"What I can say is that this go-around, being able to work with a team of women and look at these stories [and] these characters through a female lens is something that — whether I was doing a reboot or a brand-new show or a different movie at this phase in my life, female teamwork is something that is so vital to me," Burton said. "It is the core of anything I've done that's successful. So I'm excited to be able to team up with people that I look up to, people that I love dearly."
Entertainment Weekly confirmed in August that a One Tree Hill sequel series is in development with original stars Burton, Bush, and Danneel Ackles slated to reprise their roles. The new series has reportedly found a home at Netflix, and Warner Bros. Television will produce, with all three women serving as executive producers.
News of the reboot comes nearly seven years after Burton, Bush, and Ackles were among the 18 former female cast and crew members who accused One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn of physical and emotional manipulation and sexual harassment. Schwahn has never publicly addressed the allegations but was removed from his role as showrunner of E!’s The Royals in 2017.
Burton, who spent six seasons as One Tree Hill’s Peyton Sawyer, added that the reboot is influenced by her own adult perspective, saying the stories she wants to tell in this phase of her life "are very different than they were when I was 20."

The actress also said it was heartening to see the reboot news so well received by fans of the OG series. "The nicest thing is seeing the positive fan reaction to it and all of our friends from the show commenting on posts and just getting to show enthusiasm," she said. "Because obviously we want Netflix to greenlight it."
Set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, N.C., One Tree Hill follows feuding brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan Scott (James Lafferty) and best friends Peyton Sawyer (Burton Morgan) and Brooke Davis (Bush). Ackles joined the show in season 4, playing Rachel, a rival to Brooke who ultimately becomes her friend. The series, which began as a straightforward teen drama, later became known for its increasingly crazy storylines as it trailed the lives of its leads, jumping from their teen to their young adult years about halfway through its nine-season run.
