Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have gushed over their adorable baby boy, with the Duchess of Sussex saying ‘he has the sweetest temperament’.

The public was given a glimpse of the baby, who they named Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, swaddled in white and wearing a beanie.

Prince Harry beamed as he held on tightly to the tot, with his wife, Meghan Markle, by his side in a belted dress by London-based menswear designer Grace Wales Bonner.

She paired it with a pair of suede Manolo Blahnik heels.

"He has the sweetest temperament, he's really calm. He's been the dream,” a proud Meghan said in an interview with the BBC, to which Harry replied: "I don't know who he gets that from."

"It's only been two and a half days, three days, but we're just so thrilled to have our own little bundle of joy,” Prince continued.

Meanwhile Meghan couldn’t contain her joy as she was asked how her first few days as a mother were going.

"It's magic, it's pretty amazing. I have the two best guys in the world so I'm really happy,” she said.

Prince Harry went on to say he doesn’t know who the baby looks like yet and that he’s ‘changing every single day’.

The 33-year-old prince agreed, stating that ‘parenting is amazing’.

Why he’s not a prince

We’ve yet to find out the baby’s official title (if any), however, it seems clear he has not been given a ‘prince’ title.

Despite his father being a ‘prince’, baby Archie does not automatically inherit the title of ‘prince’ at birth.

In 1917, George V limited titles within the royal family so prince and princess titles and the HRH status are now only reserved for children or grandchildren of the Monarch, and baby Sussex is the great grandchild of the Queen.

Prince George was the exception as his father, Prince William is in line to be king, and the Queen actually issued a new Letters Patent when Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis were born to give them the same title as their older brother.

If she didn’t, the now Princess and Prince would have been known as Lady Charlotte Mountbatten-Windsor and Earl Louis Mountbatten-Windsor.

When Charles ascends to the throne, Harry and Meghan’s future children will be entitled to the ‘prince’ and ‘princess’ titles by birth, unless they choose not to accept them. Harry’s uncle Prince Edward did this with his daughter Lady Louise and son James, who is known as Viscount Severn.

Congratulations

The baby is seventh in line to the throne, after dad Harry, cousin, George, Charlotte and Louis, uncle William and grandfather Charles.

Congratulations have been flowing in for the couple, including from Princess Diana’s siblings who are “delighted by the news”, and Meghan’s mum Doria who is “overjoyed by the arrival of her first grandchild”.

But perhaps the funniest comment came from the nearest quarters, with Prince William joking, “I'm very pleased and glad to welcome my own brother into the sleep deprivation society that is parenting.”

Meanwhile Meghan’s estranged Markle family have also been outspoken. Her father Thomas Markle received blue balloons and flowers at his home in Mexico and told The Sun, “I am proud that my new grandson is born into the British royal family and I am sure that he will grow up to serve the crown and the people of Britain with grace, dignity, and honour.”

The Duchess’ half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr. issued a plea to Meghan to let him see her newborn son and her half-sister Samantha said, We've extended the olive branch and now it is Meghan's turn. I would really like to see everyone reach out”.

Addressing the media earlier this week, Harry said his baby boy "is absolutely to die for”.

“It was amazing, absolutely incredible,” he said of the birth, “As I say, I am so incredibly proud of my wife and, as every father and parent would ever say your baby is absolutely amazing, this little baby is absolutely to die for.”
