Halsey is sharing some new insight into her latest single, "Lucky," and how Britney Spears was there "every step of the way."

The three-time Grammy nominee, 29, said in a new interview with BBC Radio 1 that for the new track — which interpolates Spears' 2000 hit of the same name — Spears was filled in on Halsey's plans ahead of its release.

"I shared everything with her every step of the way," Halsey (who uses they/them and she/her pronouns) said. "Down to, from the first demo of the song. I sent her a shot-for-shot treatment of the music video just because I wanted to make sure I was totally nailing it."

As Halsey explained, the pair even "traded merch."

"She sent me 'Lucky' merch for the 'Lucky' anniversary, and I sent her some merch and stuff like that," they added. "It's definitely like a pinch me thing. I didn't even know she knew who I was, kinda. And so every day I'm kind of just looking around being like, there's a 6-year-old girl that's freaking out."

Halsey ultimately released "Lucky" on Friday, July 26. The song, which also includes an interpolation of Monica's 1997 hit "Angel of Mine" in its production, earned Spears' blessing before Halsey put it out, a release noted at the time.

"Lucky" features production by Michael Uzowuru and explores Halsey's relationship with fame, motherhood and public commentary on her health. Halsey revealed in June that they had been diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus and a rare T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder. And the visual itself — which depicts Halsey's shaved head beneath her wig before getting treatment for an illness — also pays homage to both Spears' videos for "Lucky" and "Toxic." Upon its release, Halsey wrote on Instagram that they had "a lot of feelings."

"it was really challenging to incorporate so many conflicting emotions in just a few minutes. this campaign has been fun because I WANT to have fun, but I made lot of this art when I was suffering," they wrote.

"I have so many people to thank for being a part of this monumental moment in my life. From the bottom of my heart thank you @giancarla.coppola , pascale , and @simonrex415 and my entire team for making it happen. ⭐️"

Hours after the video's release last month, Spears appeared to post about it on X (formerly Twitter), writing that she was "very upset about the Halsey video" and felt "harassed, violated, and bullied." The message also read that she would be "speaking with my lawyers today to see what can be done on this matter."

Spears then deleted the critique, clarifying that it was "fake news" and claimed that "that was not me" on her phone. "I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it !!!" wrote Spears on X.

In response, Halsey showed support for Spears with their own post on the platform, writing: ""I love Britney!!!! I always have and always will you were the first person who ever made me realize what it means to feel inspired. And you continue to inspire me everyday."

"Lucky" marked Halsey's first release since their June single, "The End." Their last studio album, If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power was released in 2021.
