Halsey 'shared everything' with Britney Spears about new song 'every step of the way,' the 'Lucky' singer says

They also traded merch with the “Toxic” singer.

Halsey’s new song “Lucky” is heavily inspired by another track of the same name — and the “Graveyard” singer said they consulted with their hero Britney Spears while crafting the tune.

Halsey got approval to interpolate Spears’ 2000 song “Lucky” into the new track, the singer, who uses both she/her and they/them pronouns, told BBC Radio 1. “I shared everything with her every step of the way, you know what I mean?” they said.

Halsey also noted that they looped the “Baby One More Time” musician into conversations about the song’s corresponding video, which also evokes Spears’ work.

“I sent her a shot-for-shot treatment of the music video just because I wanted to make sure I was totally nailing it,” Halsey said, also noting that the exchange didn’t stop there. “We also traded merch, she sent me ‘Lucky’ merch for the ‘Lucky’ anniversary, and I sent her some merch and stuff like that.”

Halsey, who has long admired Spears’ work, said that communicating with her about the song was a dream come true.

“It’s definitely like a pinch-me thing, like I didn’t even know she knew who I was,” they said. “So every day I’m kind of just like looking around being like, There’s a six-year-old girl in my heart that’s freaking out, you know?”

In the song, Halsey changes Spears’ lyrics to the first person, singing, "I'm so lucky, I'm a star/ But I cry, cry, cry in my lonely heart, thinking / If there's nothing missing in my life / Then why do these tears come at night?"

The song also details Halsey’s recent health experiences. “I shaved my head four times because I wanted to and then I did it one more time cause I got sick,” they sing. “I thought I changed so much nobody would notice s---, and no one did. Then I left the doctor’s office full of tears / Became a single mom at my premiere / I told everybody I was fine for a whole damn year, and that’s the biggest lie of my career.”

Halsey hasn't been thrilled by fan reactions to the video. “My own fans are hands down meaner to me than any other people on the planet,” they wrote on Tumblr on Tuesday. “Not speaking for all of you, of course. But it used to be just a minority that were awful to me and now it seems like a majority have only stuck around to chime in occasionally with their opinion of how much they hate me or how awful I am.”

"I am not gonna do anything that doesn’t make me happy anymore. I can’t spiritually afford it," Halsey continued in their post. “When I got sick all I could think about was getting better so I could come back and be a part of THIS again, but I don’t even know what *this* is anymore and I want to crawl in a hole and I regret coming back.”
