Halle Berry Just Re-Wore Her History-Making 2002 Oscars Elie Saab Naked Dress
Cast your minds back (if you can) to 2002. Serena and Venus Williams faced each other off in the Wimbledon Women’s singles final for the first time, David Beckham debuted the faux-hawk, and the nation was divided over who should win Pop Idol: Gareth Gates or Will Young. But perhaps most memorably, Halle Berry stole the show at the 74th Annual Academy Awards—aka the Oscars—that year.
The actor made history as the first-ever Black woman to win the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Monster Ball. With photos of Halle clutching her trophy and celebrating such a momentous win circulating everywhere, her dress for the occasion has become pretty iconic over the years.
You know the one: the Elie Saab gown with a see-through bodice embellished with floral appliqué, which she paired with a low-waist burgundy skirt and voluminous train overlay. Thankfully, Halle is here to refresh your memory by re-wearing her Oscars ‘fit for the first time in 22 years.
To mark 45 years of Elie Saab, the fashion house arranged a fashion show of more than 300 looks to honor the Middle Eastern designer’s work, aptly titled “1001 Seasons of Elie Saab.” Held in Saudi Arabia and featuring performances from Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello, and Celine Dion, the grand finale saw Halle strut her stuff on the runway in the dress that many credit with putting Elie Saab on the map. Talk about saving the best for last!
Halle’s dress has previously been displayed at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, according to The Cut. And it’s no wonder why, with comments on the brand’s Instagram post reading:
“Nothing more iconic 🔥❤️”
“One of the most stunning gowns ever!”
“I remember this was sooo iconic, the dress was made for her 🔥🔥🔥”
“Iconic dress on a sublime actress… still the most beautiful dress ever worn at the Oscars 😍”
“This👏was👏a👏moment!”
“The dress that changed the game! Withstood the test of time❤️”
Yep, it was iconic then, and it’s still iconic now.
