Haider Ackermann has been appointed creative director at Tom Ford, effective immediately.

In his new role, the designer will oversee all fashion categories, including menswear, womenswear, accessories and eyewear, as well as guiding the creative vision for the overall brand, which is known for its high-octane eveningwear and glamorous, maximalist aesthetic. He will show his first Tom Ford collection during Paris Fashion Week in March next year.

"I have long been a great fan of Haider’s work," said the brand's founder, Tom Ford, in a statement today. "I find both his womenswear and menswear equally compelling. He is an incredible colourist, his tailoring is sharp, and above all he is modern. We share many of the same historical references, and I could not be more excited to see what he does with the brand. I suspect that I will be the first on my feet to applaud after his show in March.”

A Colombia-born French national, Ackermann studied fashion at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Under his own label, he has become known for his sharp tailoring and avant-garde, yet wearable designs – spanning both men's and womenswear – and has fostered strong working relationships with the likes of Timothée Chalamet and Tilda Swinton.

Ackermann succeeds Peter Hawkings, who stepped down in July after just one year in the role. Prior to Hawkings' appointment in the spring of 2023, Ford himself was creative director at his eponymous brand for 18 years.

"It is with tremendous pride that I will seek to honour the legacy of Tom Ford, a man I have long admired and have the utmost respect for," said Ackermann. "I am much looking forward to what lies ahead."

The designer will be based in Paris and report to Guillaume Jesel, the president and CEO of Tom Ford and Luxury Business Development at The Estée Lauder Companies, as well as to Lelio Gavazza, the CEO of Tom Ford Fashion at the Ermenegildo Zegna Group.

"Haider stands out as one of the world's most visionary and inspiring talents in fashion. He draws on his deep affinity for global culture and the arts to create arresting fashion and memorable emotional connections," said Jesel. "He is the ideal steward to usher Tom Ford into the future."

Gavazza added: "His unparalleled creativity, which is aligned with the brand's DNA, as well as his renowned experience in luxury will be instrumental in driving the fashion business forward during its next important phase of expansion. Working alongside the talented team at Tom Ford Fashion, Haider’s modern vision, for both men’s and women’s wear, will be essential as we advance and execute the many projects we have in development."
