After The Internet Baselessly Pitted Meghan Markle And Gwyneth Paltrow Against One Another, They Hit Back In The Most Iconic Way Possible

Over the weekend, the internet went into overdrive as it desperately tried to drag Meghan Markle down by pitting her against Gwyneth Paltrow — despite Gwyneth explicitly saying just days earlier that she is all for the Duchess of Sussex’s recent venture into the lifestyle world. If you’re wondering how these two things are even related, Gwyneth launched her brand Goop back in 2008, and is undeniably one of the leading faces of famous people in the lifestyle avenue.

Speaking to Vanity Fair just last week, Gwyneth said that she hadn’t had the opportunity to become friends with Meghan, but added: “I mean, I’ve met Meghan, who seems really lovely, but I don’t know her at all — maybe I’ll try to get through their security detail and bring them a pie.”

She went on to make some pretty pointed comments about how Meghan has been treated by both the media and the public in recent years, stating: “[When] there’s noise about certain women in the culture, I do have, always, a strong instinct to stand up for them.”

And Gwyneth even emphasized that she supports Meghan’s upcoming As Ever lifestyle brand, saying: “I was raised to see other women as friends, not foes. I think there’s always more than enough to go around. Everybody deserves an attempt at everything that they want to try.”

You would think that all of that would have made it pretty clear that Gwyneth has absolutely no beef with Meghan, yet when she posted one of her regular home cooking videos to Instagram a couple of days later, people reveled in the opportunity to create Gwyneth vs. Meghan drama.

In the video, Gwyneth made breakfast in her kitchen while makeup-free and wearing pajamas. For some reason, it was instantly compared to Meghan’s glossy Netflix show With Love, Meghan, and Gwyneth’s followers started to do all sorts of mental gymnastics to interpret her post as shade toward Meghan. This quickly led to news articles that fueled the fire, with some tabloids broadly claiming that Gwyneth was “mocking” Meghan, while others said that Meghan’s subsequent Instagram story reinventing the banana split with a friend was her way of “firing back” at Gwyneth.

There was just one major problem with this narrative: Gwyneth has been posting these kinds of videos making food in her kitchen for literally years — long before Meghan’s show was even announced.

With Love, Meghan premiered earlier this month, and prior to that, Gwyneth had shared several videos similar to the one that was interpreted as “shading Meghan” this year — all in her pajamas, and all makeup-free. In one of them, which was posted on Feb. 15, Gwyneth even showed off her wicker basket filled with produce that she’d picked from her garden, and you can only imagine the field day that people would have had if that had been released in a post-With Love, Meghan world.

And while the devoted Meghan haters refused to accept that Gwyneth’s post was anything but her mocking the mom-of-two, even after all of this was pointed out, Gwyneth has now set the record straight in the most iconic way possible. The star did a Q&A on her Instagram story on Tuesday, and was asked: “Are you comprehending the Meghan Markle beef that social media says you two have?”

And Gwyneth replied with a video, saying to the camera: “I genuinely do not understand this at all, whatsoever,” she then panned the camera to Meghan herself, asking: “Do you understand this?”

Meghan pointedly shrugged at the camera while laughing, and as an extra je ne sais quoi, there is a perfect throwback to Gwyneth’s Vanity Fair quotes as the duchess is tucking into a slice of pie in the star’s kitchen.

Now, you would think — and hope — that this would be enough to put an end to any beef rumors, but this is, of course, Meghan, and considering the internet’s inability to be at all normal where she is concerned, I definitely won't hold my breath that this is the last of the fabricated drama.
