On Monday, The White Lotus dropped its official teaser for the highly anticipated third season. The show returns on Feb. 16 on Max, and Season 3 looks to be just as high-stakes, glamorous, and suspenseful as the past two seasons more than proved themselves to be.
This whodunnit series — about the lives of staff and guests at a fictional and fancy resort chain called The White Lotus, with locations across the globe — has mastered the art of keeping the mystery alive all season long. As such, the Season 3 trailer doesn't tell us much about what's in store this time, but it does offer a teaser.
So, here's everything that we gleaned from the video, though take much of it with a grain of salt for now:
1. The season is set in Thailand.
OK, this much we already knew. In February, Max posted a photo from filming in Thailand on Instagram, announcing that the third season would be set in the country. This follows Season 1 in Hawaii and Season 2 in Sicily, Italy.
All seasons are filmed at Four Seasons properties. According to Travel & Leisure , Season 3 was filmed at Four Seasons Koh Samui. Koh Samu is an island in the Gulf of Thailand. The teaser offered a few early glimpses at the property.
Max / Via youtube.com 2. We've got the signature welcome wave from the White Lotus staff.
Max
3. Blackpink's Lisa, billed in the series by her real name Lalisa Manobal, plays Mook, a health mentor at the resort.
The pop star gets the first words in the teaser: "Welcome to the White Lotus in Thailand."
Max 4. We got a glimpse at other staff members standing behind Mook.
On the left, we've got Lek Patravadi as Sritala, an owner of The White Lotus. Wow! She's described in the press release as "the visionary behind its wellness program."
On the right is The Zone of Interest's Christian Friedel, though not much is known about his character.
Max 5. Belinda is back!
Natasha Rothwell starred as Belinda, the spa manager in Season 1. Without giving too much away to those who (still, seriously?) haven't watched the first season, she forms an unexpected friendship with one of the guests, the eccentric Tanya McQuoid (Jennifer Coolidge ).
Belinda didn't return for Season 2, but the teaser revealed the nature of Belinda's return. "I'm on an exchange program," she says. The press release described her as the "spa manager from The White Lotus in Hawaii." So Belinda got a sweet work trip? Good for her!
Max 6. There might be a connection between Belinda and a staff member.
Dom Hetrakul plays the staff member. While this scene plays, Belinda can be heard, saying, "I'm starting to feel something good is going to come out of this."
Oh, Belinda, I fear that may not be the case based solely on the fact that this show's characters are famously pushed to their limits . Please prove me wrong!
Max 7. Fallout 's Walton Goggins and Sex Education 's Aimee Lou Wood play a couple.
According to the press release, Aimee Lou Wood plays Chelsea, "a free-spirit," while Walton Goggins plays Rick Hatchett, a "rugged man with a chip on his shoulder." The release also describes Rick as "on-edge" and "older" than Chelsea.
This couple's relationship is immediately displayed in the teaser, where Chelsea notes that Rick needs a stress-management meditation, presumably one offered at the resort. However, Rick doesn't seem to be taking well to the emphasis on health and wellness. "Gluten-free rice and coconut balls. What are we at, a fucking fat farm?" he says.
Max / Via youtube.com 8. Apparently, Chelsea faces a near-death experience.
"I almost died today," Chelsea says at a dinner scene with Rick before noting, "but we got the room comped, didn't we, babes? That was cool."
Rick responds unconvincingly, "Yeah, you did a great job, babe."
Max 9. Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sam Nivola, and Sarah Catherine Hook play the Ratliffs.
Every White Lotus season has an awkward family trip, and the Ratliffs seem to be the pick this season. Jason Isaacs and Parker Posey play the parents, Timothy and Victoria. Timothy is described as a "wealthy businessman."
Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sarah Catherine Hook, and Sam Nivola play their children Saxon, Piper, and Lochlan. Here's what we know about them: Saxon works for Timothy's "successful" business, Piper is a college senior majoring in religious studies, and Lochlan is finishing high school.
We don't learn much about them in the trailer, though we're given shots of Timothy seemingly in distress and Saxon dancing shirtless with someone in what looks to be a hotel room. However, the youngest child, Lochlan, gets one of the biggest spotlights when he says, "If everybody gives in to their base instincts, it'd be total depravity. Like a race to the bottom."
Max / Via youtube.com 10. Someone, apparently, steals Victoria's Lorazepam.
In the trailer, Victoria is heard saying someone stole her Lorazepam while we see her search in her (chic) purse. This prompts her to claim, "I'm going to have to drink myself to sleep."
Max / Via youtube.com 11. Carrie Coon, Leslie Bibb, and Michelle Monaghan's characters on a girls' trip.
Carrie Coon is Laurie, Leslie Bibb is Kate, and Michelle Monaghan is Jaclyn. They're "three long-time friends on a girls' trip after not having seen each other for a while."
Max / Via youtube.com 12. The best friends may not exactly be seeing eye-to-eye these days.
Jaclyn says in the teaser, "We should do something fun today."
Immediately after, we see Laurie telling Kate at breakfast, "She literally lives off male attention. It's pathetic." A clip plays of Jaclyn dancing with two men while this is said.
Max / Via youtube.com 13. There's violence...
Max
14. ...a mysterious gun...
Max
15. ...what looks to be a robbery...
Max
16. ...and, of course, a dead body.
Who knows if any of these moments are related?
Max 17. Several images evoke spirituality and religion, which aligns with the season's apparent themes of health and wellness.
Max
18. Finally, a monk seems to give the most significant indication of what's in store this season.
"Everyone runs from pain towards pleasure," they say. "But they get there only to find more pain."
