Grotesquerie Episode 6 Sets the Stage for a Killer Reveal — Here’s Our Crazy Little Theory

Warning: This recap spoils the events of American Horror Story: Grotesquerie Episodes 5 and 6.

Wednesday’s Grotesquerie double header concluded with Lois gunning down someone who could very well be the show’s titular serial killer. Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait yet another week to find out which (probably hot) face is lurking under their mask.

So, how did we arrive at this pivotal moment? Let’s rewind to Episode 5: Joined by a hitchhiker named Andrea, Lois and Sister Megan sought refuge at a roadside motel, the kind of run-down joint that looks like it was made for some “good old-fashioned fornicating.” If only it were so quaint. Instead, the girls who lived and worked there were all being abused by the owner, and when Megan tried to rescue one of them from an armed kidnapper, she got caught in the crossfire and bled out in Lois’ arms.

Father Chaps — sorry, Father Charlie — rushed to his forbidden lover’s hospital bed, even bringing a bouquet of Megan’s favorite flowers. (Look, we agree that the whipping and foaming at the mouth is next-level crazy, but we’re still ‘shipping these two. If you really think about it, they might actually have the healthiest relationship of any couple in the Grotesquerie universe. Prove us wrong.)

Of course, there are upsides to Megan being in a coma. For example, she didn’t have to witness the brutal aftermath of the killer’s visit to a maternity house, where multiple pregnant women died of shock and blood loss after having their babies ripped from their wombs. And like the worst lipstick message a departing queen could possibly leave on RuPaul’s Drag Race, this massacre was accompanied by a chilling note scrawled in blood: “Follow me, Detective Tryon. Let the dead bury the dead.”

In one of Grotesquerie‘s most disturbing twists yet (which is saying a lot!), the babies were ultimately discovered at a bottling plant where women were being violently milked by machines. While Lois surveyed the nightmarish scene, including a wall of stalker-azzi photos, a shadowy figure approached her from behind with a knife to her neck. Displaying surprisingly quick reflexes for someone whose blood alcohol level was presumably off the charts, Lois broke free and fired a bullet into her assailant’s chest.

This leaves us with the million-dollar question: Who’s under the mask? Our gut tells us it’s Father Charlie, given that the killer’s bloody note ended with a Bible verse. Plus, Lois’ old enemy Glorious (played by Broadway great Lillias White) referred to the killer as a “false prophet.”

But our heart longs for a far more twisted explanation to this season’s murder mystery — what if Lois’ own husband is the one taunting her? We learned this week that Nurse Redd took his seminar on terror management, and they basically had a full-blown affair before he slipped into his “coma,” so what if they’ve been working together this whole time?

Hey, at least Megan opened her eyes at the very end of Episode 6. We could really use another showtune to lighten the mood right about now.

So, how are we feeling after Grotesquerie‘s third week? Any fun theories about who’s messing with Lois? (For the record, we’ll be big-time annoyed if it turns out to be her.) And what’s your take on the overall setting of this show? Could there be anything to that “it’s heaven, but it can seem like hell” comment? Whatever’s on your mind, drop it in a comment below.
