Ghost caught on camera at former mental asylum

If there's ever somewhere you don't want to be wandering around by yourself, it's a former mental hospital - but for one tourist, it saw her capture a chilling image of a ghostly figure she's now sharing with sceptics.

Dawn Kershaw, 50, was visiting Newsham Park Hospital, Liverpool, when she ventured off into a room on Ward E, a part of the hospital that previously housed mentally ill patients, and decided to take a picture on her camera.

It wasn't until the next day while looking through the images on her computer that she made the spine-chilling discovery.

"I have always been sceptical of anything paranormal and part of the reason I started going on these ghost tours was to try and prove it,” said Dawn, from Lancashire.

"When I saw the picture I could see what I thought was a figure but it was when I added the black and white filter over the image that it really stood out.

"I couldn't believe it."

Dawn had gone along to the haunted tour of the hospital with three of her friends, but after a few paranormal experiments ventured off on her own to explore the ward.

She was left feeling uneasy when she made her way into the pitch black room.

"We had done a few other experiments such as table sitting, a type of séances where you place your hands on the table and wait for it to rotate,” said Dawn.

"We had heard some very clear knocking noises from underneath, one man had even sat under the table to make sure it wasn't a setup.

"The tour guides then allow you some time to wonder and I like to go off on my own so I can make sure that nothing is set up or planned.

"I have done a few ghost tours, even sat in rooms doing séances on my own, but when I opened the door I felt uneasy about going in.

"I stood by the door and pushed the camera in before taking a quick picture and joining the group again."

Originally opened as an orphanage in 1899 before becoming a hospital in 1954, with its own psychiatric department, receiving patients with severe mental problems.

The building now sits empty with wheelchairs left in corridors and mortuary fridges still left intact.

In May this year, a group photo from a ghost tour went viral when it appeared to show the ghost of a girl who could not be identified.

For Dawn, it’s still a shocking moment when she looks at her snap – but it hasn’t deterred her from going on other tours.

"It's a very eerie place with hospital equipment still left lying around,” she said.

"Lots of people have reported the ghost of a lady who committed suicide at the hospital and an evil male spirit too.

"I will definitely be going on more tours and hopefully capture more activity.”
