As wildfires continue to rage across Los Angeles, many actors and celebrities have seen their homes destroyed. Cameron Mathison, star of soap operas like General Hospital and All My Children, is one of those actors who lost his home to the inferno. Mathison described how shattering the experience has been in an interview on Good Morning America on Thursday.

“I’ve been up all night. I can’t sleep. I’ve lost my home and everything that I own," Mathison said. Referring to the black sweatshirt he was wearing during the virtual interview, he noted, "I have this hoodie and a pair of pants and two pairs of sneakers left, that’s it. It’s important to focus on the things that we have and can be grateful for. There’s a lot of that, but at the same time, unless you’ve gone through it, it’s hard to get your head out of that. You’re just stuck thinking and reeling."

Mathison continued, "every few minutes we’re thinking about things that were in there that are irreplaceable. There are lots of things that are replaceable, but the kids’ projects, their baby photos were only film, my childhood photos... Of course it’s just stuff, but at the same time it is just so unsettling and so surreal. Thinking of the hundreds and hundreds of people who are going through the same thing, it’s so devastating.”

Mathison previously documented his return to the ruins of his family home in Altadena on Instagram, where he posted a video walkthrough of the fiery remains.

"We are safe, but this is what’s left of our beautiful home, our home where our kids were raised and where they wanted to raise their own someday," Mathison wrote on Instagram. "Thanks to all who reached out and checked in. Can’t respond to all so wanted to give an update here. Sending so many prayers to everyone being affected by these fires."

On his Instagram Stories, Mathison filmed the drive back to what used to be his house, and you can hear him making guttural crying sounds of sadness and shock as he does so. Mathison explained that reaction in a follow-up interview with CNN.

"I've never heard those sounds come out of me before," Mathison told CNN. "It was very odd. It's a guttural pain and disbelief and fear as I was approaching my property and not seeing the house."

Mathison told CNN he was woken up early by TV coverage of the ongoing L.A. wildfires. When he saw his neighborhood aflame but couldn't see his own house, he knew he had to see it for himself.

"I couldn't see from the camera angles whether my house was spared or wasn't. I just couldn't take it anymore, so I got in the car and weaved my way up into the neighborhood," Mathison said on CNN. The actor started tearing up as he recalled, "when I came to our stretch of houses, it was just totally decimated...On our block in particular, there was pretty much nothing left. It looked like there were no houses ever built there. It was just decimated to nothing."

Mathison is far from the only L.A.-based actor to be devastated by the ongoing fires. Billy Crystal, James Woods, Paris Hilton are among those who have lost their homes to the disaster. They have all confirmed their safety, but thousands of people have been evacuated from the area, and five people have died according to the latest reporting.
