‘Game of Thrones’ Star Iain Glen Joins TBA Studios’ Philippines Historical Biopic ‘Quezon’ (EXCLUSIVE)

“Game of Thrones” veteran Iain Glen has joined the cast of TBA Studios’ historical biopic “Quezon,” it was revealed on the sidelines of Hong Kong FilMart.

Glen, known for his role as the loyal Jorah Mormont in HBO’s fantasy series, will portray Leonard Wood, the U.S. Army major who served as governor-general of the Philippines from 1921-1927. Wood was instrumental in Manuel Quezon’s quest for Philippines’ independence from the U.S.

The film, directed and co-written by Jerrold Tarog (“Goyo: The Boy General,” “Heneral Luna”) is a biopic that chronicles the life of the Filipino lawyer and soldier Manuel L. Quezon, who served as president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines from 1935 to 1944. Jericho Rosales plays Quezon, and the cast also includes Mon Confiado, Benjamin Alves, Karylle Yuzon, Romnick Sarmenta, J.C. Santos and Cris Villanueva.

Glen recently participated in a script reading at the Manila Hotel in Manila alongside the film’s cast and crew.

Tarog praised Glen’s casting, saying it makes the film “much more alive.” “(Iain Glen) has gravitas. But at the same time, he can let loose, which is important for the role of Leonard Wood,” Tarog noted.

TBA Studios president and COO Daphne O. Chiu added: “We are very honored to have Iain Glen in ‘Quezon.’ This film is shaping up to be one of the biggest productions in Philippine cinema, with one of the largest casts ever assembled. We are excited to share with Iain — and the rest of the world — the production scale and level of artistry that Filipino filmmakers are capable of.”

The film has secured support from multiple Philippine government agencies, including the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), with the latter providing funding. Additional backing comes from the Department of Tourism and the QCinema Film Foundation.

“Quezon” begins production this month. The film continues TBA Studios’ series of films based on Philippine history, following the studio’s box office successes “Heneral Luna” and “Goyo: The Boy General.” It marks the company’s first major film production since 2020, after distributing award-winning international films including “Everything Everywhere All At Once,” “Past Lives,” “The Whale” and “Triangle of Sadness” to Philippine theaters.

Glen’s recent work includes Dr. Pete Nichols in Apple TV+’s dystopian drama “Silo” and Magnus MacMillan in Prime Video’s supernatural thriller “The Rig.” He also voices Juste Belmont in Netflix’s animated show “Castlevania: Nocturne.”
