“Game of Thrones” spinoff “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” finds its own Daeron Targaryen

HBO's six-episode series based on George R.R. Martin's "Dunk and Egg" novellas is set to debut next year.

House of the Dragon fans have been getting increasingly more excited for the eventual arrival of Daeron Targaryen, and HBO knows it. So why settle for one when you can have two?

Even before House of the Dragon season 3 arrives, fantasy fans will be treated to HBO's next Game of Thrones spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, in 2025. On Thursday, the network announced the latest round of casting for the show (based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas), and it includes a familiar-sounding name from the family of fire and blood.

To be clear, Ashton's character is not the dragon-rider coming soon to House of the Dragon; that character has not yet been cast. It's just that House Targaryen likes to repeat the same names over and over again throughout their family history. So even though A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set around 90 years before Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon is set about an additional 100 years before that, they share a character with the same name.

As previously announced, Peter Claffey will portray Ser Duncan the Tall, a.k.a. "Dunk," a former squire who takes up the possessions of the newly-deceased hedge knight he served and works to become a knight in his own right. Dexter Sol Ansell plays his new squire "Egg," who may also be connected to House Targaryen. The six-episode series will be written and executive produced by Ira Parker and Martin, with House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal providing "some Obi-Wan Kenobi advice from afar."

"Dunk and Egg is about the small folk who suffer at the hands of the game of thrones as it's played by the nobles," Condal told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year.
