It’s a sad day for Aussies who grew up on Cottee's cordial, as new trends call for healthier options.

There truly was nothing quite like a cold orange cordial on a hot summer’s day, but it seems consumers are increasingly turning their backs on the trusted brand that has been around since 1927.

A Woolworths spokesman told new.com.au, “Customers are looking for healthier options for themselves and their families, and in turn are seeking out products that contain less sugar or no added sugar.”

It’s not just Cottee’s that’s going under, new data has revealed young shoppers in particular are abandoning colourful cordials in droves.

According to new.com.au, cordial sales in Australia have declined by 5.8 per cent by value and 11.2 per cent by volume in the 12 months prior to October 2015.

While cordial penetration is now at 53.7 per cent of households, compared to 58.7 per cent in 2013.

“People don’t realise just how much sugar they’re adding even with just a splash of cordial,” nutritionist and dietitian Dr Joanna McMillan told the publication, “Because it’s so concentrated, even a small amount is the same as a sugar-sweetened soft drink.”

“If under 35s are stopping, that does show the message around sugar-sweetened drinks is getting through,” she says.
