“I Know What I Look Like”: Florence Pugh Talked About Finding Confidence Despite “Nasty” Commentary About Her Body

Throughout her career in the spotlight, Florence Pugh has always made a point of promoting body confidence.

For example, in August 2023, she told Elle UK that she found freedom in embracing her body as it is, saying: “I speak the way I do about my body because I’m not trying to hide the cellulite on my thigh or the squidge in between my arm and my boob: I would much rather lay it all out.”

Before this, she told Vogue that she’d “never” consider losing weight “to look fantastic for a role.”

“We are human; we are bodies,” she said in a January 2023 interview. “Yes, I can put makeup on and look good for a premiere. But at the end of the day, I still have hair on the top of my lip and I still smell after a workout and I still get spots when I’m stressed.”

And now, in a brand-new cover interview for British Vogue, the 28-year-old got real about embracing her insecurities and looking beyond “mean” criticism about her appearance.

“It’s so hard, [the internet’s] a very mean place,” she said. “It’s really painful to read people being nasty about my confidence or nasty about my weight. It never feels good.”

She added: “The one thing I always wanted to achieve was to never sell someone else, something that isn’t the real me.”

Notably, Florence was asked if she’s always been “body confident,” to which she said: “I think it’s just, like, I don’t want to be anyone else.”

Despite this, the Midsommar star did say she’s had to learn how to portray a “completely different version” of herself during photoshoots.

“You have to believe that you deserve to be in those pages being beautiful,” she said. “But now I know what I want to show. I know who I want to show. I know who I want to be and I know what I look like.”

“There’s no insecurities about what I am anymore,” she added.

Unfortunately, body scrutiny is inevitable for many celebrities, particularly when, like Florence, they’re in the midst of a busy time in their careers.

From Black Widow and Don’t Worry Darling to Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two, Florence’s major movie roles have meant she’s been pretty consistently in the public eye since the success of Midsommar and Little Women back in 2019.

And so, it’ll come as no surprise to hear that she suddenly found herself in need of a break from it all over the summer.

“I’m an absolute work maniac, [but] I can see I’m exhausted,” she said, telling British Vogue she “actually asked for a summer break” for the “first time ever” this year.

“I suddenly woke up last year and I was like, ‘I hate how much of my life I’ve missed,’” she confessed. “Yes, I want to have a career forever, but that’s not going to happen if I work myself into the ground.”
