The greatest Stranger Things twist ever might be if the Netflix series actually streams its farewell season in 2025, as planned.
Series creators Matt and Ross Duffer aka The Duffer Brothers appeared at this week’s Next on Netflix press event to offer up a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel (not yet made public) and talk up just how big the farewell run will be and feel.

“We spent a full year filming this season. By the end, we’d captured over 650 hours of footage,” Ross said on stage. “So, needless to say, this is our biggest and most ambitious season yet. It’s like eight blockbuster movies. It’s pretty insane.”
Matt added, At the same time, we think it’s our most personal story. It was super intense and emotional to film, for us and for our actors… And we hope — and believe — that passion will translate to the screen.”
Stranger Things Season 5: Everything We Know About the Final Episodes
When and in what form the series will land on the screens of its very patients fans is still very TBD, though, to hear both the Duffers and Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria tell it.
Will the fifth and final season hit its huge 2025 release target? And even if it does, might fans only get the first half or so of the episodes? With a second batch to arrive at a later date?
“A lot of it hasn’t been decided, in terms of exactly the release dates and cadence,” Matt Duffer told our sister site Variety. “We’re getting on a call in about a couple weeks about it. I just know it was very important for us and Netflix that we get it out this year. But even that is quite the push,” given the amount of footage to be culled and the ginormous amount of visual effects/post-production.
Rest assured, though, the Duffers are “working as fast as we possibly can,” Ross said.
Stranger Things premiered on Netflix July 15, 2016. Season 2 “quickly” followed on Oct. 27, 2017, and Season 3 dropped on July 4, 2019. Season 4 was held up by the COVID pandemic, and ultimately arrived in batches of seven episodes (on May 27, 2022) and two XL episodes (July 1, 2022).
Meanwhile, the gap between Seasons 4 and 5 — which is already at 31 months, due in part to the dual Hollywood strikes of summer 2023 — promises to be the series’ largest by far.
But as Netflix CCO Bajaria put it to Deadline, “When it comes out, whenever and however it comes out, you’re going to love every second of it.”
