What If…? Final Season Trailer Includes a Mjolnir-Wielding Storm, Sam Wilson’s Captain America

A Storm is brewing in the trailer for the third and final season of Marvel’s What If…? animated anthology, which begins streaming Sunday, Dec. 22 on Disney+, with eight daily episode releases.

In addition to the Mjolnir-wielding X-person/Goddess of Thunder, the trailer above includes glimpses of Sam Wilson’s Captain America, Moon Knight, Shang Chi, White Vision, Ironheart, Wong(ers!), Scarlet Witch, Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes, Hulk/Bruce Banner, The Red Guardian, Captain Peggy Carter, Agatha Harkness and Monica Rambeau — plus, a mech-focused episode titled, “Go-Avengers: Heroes of the Gamma War.”

The animated debut of Sam Wilson’s Cap (to be voiced by MCU vet Anthony Mackie) is noteworthy, in that across the 18 What If…? episodes that have thus far dropped — beginning in August 2021 and as recently as Dec. 30, 2023 — the animated anthology had yet to incorporate the new Captain America, who officially suited up back in April 2021 (in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier‘s Disney+ finale).

Explaining said hold-up, What If…? head writer A. C. Bradley told ComicBook.com’s Phase Zero podcast, “we were writing Season 2 as The Falcon and The Winter Soldier paused shooting and the scripts were being re-written because of other things…. So, we couldn’t touch it because … you let the character live in live-action first and then go play in the multiverse.”

Having made his star-spangled debut in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Mackie’s live-action Captain “Sam Wilson” America will next be seen headlining Captain America: Brave New World, which finds Harrison Ford succeeding William Hurt as Thaddeus ”Thunderbolt” Ross and is due out Friday, Feb. 14, 2025.
