Will Ferrell and Friend Harper Steele Go on Eye-Opening Road Trip in “Will & Harper” Documentary Trailer
'Will & Harper' is in select theaters Sept. 13 and premieres on Netflix Sept. 27
Will Ferrell and longtime friend Harper Steele star in an emotional new documentary.
On Sept. 5, Netflix debuted the first trailer for Will & Harper, which the pals filmed during a cross-country road trip after Steele, a former head writer for Saturday Night Live, came out as transgender.
The trailer teases both hilarious and poignant moments from the road trip as they reminisce on their time working together at SNL, discuss how Harper came to embrace her gender identity during the pandemic, and ponder life as a transgender woman with people they meet along the way.
Will & Ferrell played at the Sundance Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival and Telluride Film Festival this year. Steele said at Telluride that the movie is about how "friends should come together" during "moments of change or crisis."

An official Netflix description of the film explains that Steele came out to Ferrell in 2021, more than 30 years after they met while working at SNL.
"In this intimate, honest, and heartfelt documentary, Will and Harper hit the open road together to process this new stage of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country that she loves – this time, as herself," reads a synopsis.
"Over 16 days, the two drive from New York to L.A., visiting stops that are meaningful to them, to their friendship and to America. Through laughter, tears and many cans of Pringles, they push past their comfort zones as they re-examine their relationships to these spaces, and to each other, in this new light."

Ferrell and Steele spoke with Advocate magazine about making the documentary and how their shared love for humor helped them bond.
“I think it helps that Harper and I have known each other for close to 30 years and we really got to know each other through the language of comedy,” Ferrell told the outlet. “I also think we only really tease and joke about the ones we love the most. I believe that as long as there is a base of sensitivity and understanding, some gentle teasing helps demystify the topic.”
Seth Meyers, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, Colin Jost, Will Forte, Molly Shannon, Tim Meadows and Paula Pell all appear in the new documentary.
Will & Harper is in select theaters Sept. 13, then on Netflix Sept. 27.
