Everyone Is Mad Brooklyn Beckham Got The Burberry Gig

“It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.”

That’s the sentiment that’s been echoing around social media since Friday, when Brooklyn Beckham—the 16-year-old son of David and Victoria Beckham—announced that he’d be shooting the new campaign for Burberry’s ‘This Is Brit’ fragrance.

Though the teenager has expressed his interest in photography to his 5.9 million followers on Instagram, this is the first-known professional photo job he’s ever had. And obviously, the gig’s a bit bigger than taking engagement pictures for a family friend.

Over the weekend, Twitter users expressed their distaste of Burberry’s hire — calling it ‘nepotism’ and an insult to actual professional photographers who typically scrape by for years before scoring something as major as this.

Celebrity portrait photographer Chris Floyd and magazine photog Jon Gorrigan also discussed their frustrations with The Guardian, respectively calling Beckham’s work a “devaluation of photography” and “infuriating.” Gorrigan also spoke of Beckham’s lack of technical training:

“He’s obviously not going to be doing the lighting, he’ll have no clue of the programmes, the cameras or Photoshop. It’s going to be so well managed — he’ll have the best hair and makeup, the best models, the very best equipment, so that the chance of any risk is greatly reduced.

"People who are under-trained can get a good result with an Instagram filter. I suppose it keeps me on my toes. The industry is like that, a bit of injustice in a lot of areas.“

But despite the controversy, there’s little doubt from anyone — even the naysayers — that Burberry’s move to bring Beckham onboard was a wise one. That the last time the social media savvy Brit brand got so much attention for a campaign? That would be when Brooklyn’s little brother, Romeo, starred in its ads.

It seems safe to say that Goldenballs’ kids have inherited his Midas touch — even if it stirs up a bit of controversy in the process.
