The now 82-year old designer, who famously says he’ll “never leave Chanel”, will be honoured for his contribution to the industry as well as his work at Chanel and Fendi.

The accolade, which was given to Anna Wintour last year, is a long time coming for Lagerfeld, who’s arguably the most iconic figure in the fashion industry.

Chairman of the British Fashion Council, Natalie Massenet MBE said of Lagerfeld’s win: "Karl Lagerfeld defines outstanding. He is the champion of excellence, the master of the exceptional and one of the most iconic figures globally from our industry.

"His life's work for his own and so many extraordinary brands has written the language of fashion. He is the ultimate visionary and we celebrate not only the decades already passed but those yet to happen. In Karl's hands the future of fashion will be an exceptional one."

Lagerfeld says the secret to his success is simply a focus on creativity.

"I'm not into business, I don't ever think in terms of business,” he told the BBC recently. I don't go to meetings, I don't do marketing things, nothing, I just think, 'Let's try this, let's do this, let's do this'.

"When I took over the house, the owner said to me, 'For the moment it's not very trendy, I'm not really proud of it. Do what you want. If it works, OK, if it doesn't work, I sell it.' But it worked beyond."

It certainly did.
