10 Things To Know About Polyvore's Jess Lee

Polyvore co-founder and CEO Jess Lee may be one of the most successful entrepreneurs to come out of silicon valley, but did you know she's also a comic book fanatic and has modeled for Vogue?

Here's ten things you need to know about the self-confessed "tech geek" who has helped to elevate the fashion website - which has just launched in Australia in collaboration with Yahoo7 - into one of the world's most highly engaging e-commerce networks.

1. How she got the job with Polyvore

Jess's path into the role of CEO for Polyvore was unconventional to say the least. When she was working for Google, she became addicted to Polyvore, spending hours trawling through the site every night. Like a true entrepreneur, Jess thought it a good idea to provide some constructive feedback to the site, by listing out her complaints and suggested solutions in a letter. Within weeks, Jess was hired and now she is an honourary co-founder and the CEO.

2. Yahoo's Marissa Mayer was her mentor

Jess met Marissa when she went for an associate manager role at Google, where Marissa was a Google VP. She was fresh out of university and unsure of her choice of career. After a bit of sound advice from Yahoo CEO Marissa about always choosing the more challenging route, Jess was guided down the right path. Jess claims being able to observe a mentor's behaviour and actions in the workplace can be truly inspiring for aspirational women.

3. She's a major comic book fan

Growing up in Hong Kong, Jess became massively obsessed with manga comic book characters. Now, when she's not being the ultimate female boss in her corporate office, Jess is dressing up as her favourite comic book character and camping out overnight for Comic-Con. She also has a whole range of 'sets' on her Polyvore account dedicated to cartoon characters.

4. She's basically besties with Kendall and Gigi

Just last month, Jess starred in a Vogue shoot with supermodel Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid. The Polyvore co-founder said the experience was not only surreal but incredibly fast. Shot by famed photographer Mario Testino, Jess featured in a piece which sent the models on an expedition through silicon valley, stopping by at the Yahoo offices on the way. Instagram, Periscope and Pinterest were also featured in the shoot.

5. She's an introvert

Refusing to let it keep her down, Jess embraced her inner introvert and believes there are tips and tricks that people can follow to manage it. At events, Jess says she has fewer and deeper conversations with small groups of people instead of working the room and always blocks out periods of rest so she can recharge. According to Jess, it gives her team the opportunity to shine and show what they're capable of.

6. YouTube is one of her guilty pleasures

As part of her morning routine, Jess gets up, checks her SnapChat and then goes on to her favourite YouTube channels, which she watches religiously. Amongst those are Australian beauty bloggers Lauren Curtis and Wengie. According to the entrepreneur there's "a lot of great Australian creators and talent" out there.

7. She has a degree in computer science

Not only is Jess a tech whiz, fashion influencer and entrepreneur but she also has a Stanford degree in computer science. While she admits she knew next to nothing about the subject when she started the course, it turned out to be a match made in heaven and she hasn't looked back since. Jess then went on to work at Google as a Google Maps product manager until she landed her CEO role at Polyvore.

8. She loves Australian coffee and bacon

Jess has been in Australia twice before while working with the Google Maps team and the one thing she looks forward to on each visit is the incredible flat whites here. "They don’t make good ones in the US", Jess said. She's also vocal about her love of bacon on her Twitter account. While in town, Jess is also keen to try out some local eats and visit the iconic Sydney Opera House again.

9. Here's what she would be doing if she wasn't the CEO of Polyvore

If she wasn't heading up on the biggest fashion sites in the world, Jess admits she would be drawing comic books.

10. Her Halloween outfits could rival Heidi Klum's

Before she was hired by Polyvore, Jess actually won a Halloween competition for the site after putting together a set of the Super Mario Brothers, with their signature overalls and red and green caps. Not only did she win the competition but she also wore one of those outfits that Halloween. Double winning!
