Evita to return to London’s West End with revival directed by Jamie Lloyd
Andrew Lloyd’s Webber Evita is set to return to London’s West End in 2025 – with director Jamie Lloyd at the helm.
The production was teased earlier this year by Lloyd Webber, who has now confirmed the musical, which tells the story of Argentine politician Eva Perón, will return to The Palladium with a run from June 14 to September 16.
This isn’t the first time Lloyd Webber has teamed up with director Jamie Lloyd, who has become known for reinterpreting classic works in bold ways.
Their Sunset Boulevard revival starring Nicole Scherzinger transferred to Broadway this year after a hugely successful West End run.
The London production won seven Olivier Awards – including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, and Best Actor and Actress for its two lead stars – and the New York run is expected to have similar success at next year’s Tony Awards.
And this won’t be the first time Lloyd has directed a version of Evita. In 2019, he oversaw a version of the production at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre – which was given four stars and labelled “smashing” by the Standard’s theatre critic.
That version had been due to transfer to the Barbican, but the plans were derailed amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Lloyd said of the new revival: “After an unforgettable experience on Sunset Boulevard, we are excited to continue our collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and to take another look at Tim [Rice] and Andrew’s musical masterpiece, Evita.
“It is a great privilege to do so at the incredible London Palladium alongside [producer] Michael Harrison.”
Lloyd Webber and Rice’s Evita made its West End debut in 1978. It has been revived on numerous occasions since and Madonna famously took on the lead role in a 1996 film adaptation.
Casting and ticket details will be announced in due course.
