Everything to Know About Lady Gaga’s Upcoming Concept Album, 'Harlequin'
Lady Gaga is surprise-releasing a new album. Oh, and it’s coming in three days.
Earlier this afternoon, Gaga shared the cover art for her new LP, titled Harlequin, which she described as a “companion album” to the soundtrack for her upcoming psychological musical thriller Joker: Folie à Deux.
In the highly-anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning Joker (2019), Gaga portrays the titular DC character’s psychologist and eventual love interest, Harley Quinn, and she seems to be leaning into those jester vibes with this new release.
And while both the Joker sequel and its coinciding soundtrack will arrive on October 4, Gaga is getting fans amped up early by dropping Harlequin on Friday, September 27. Ahead, see everything we know about the surprise studio album.
Harlequin arrives on September 27.
While Gaga has been teasing new music for quite some time, she just revealed that fans won’t have to wait long for her next big project.
“Harlequin. September 27,” the singer wrote in an Instagram post this afternoon. “A companion album to Joker: Folie à Deux.”
The pop star also included the front album cover, which sees her standing in the shower wearing a white dress with a red life jacket resting around her neck. She rocks bright orange locks with what appears to be a drawing of a heart rinsing off her face as water spurts onto her head.
The tracklist features 13 songs, with titles like “The Joker” and “That’s Entertainment.”
With the album announcement, Gaga also shared the tracklist for Harlequin. She included of a milk carton from Gayle Valley Farms (likely a reference to Joker: Folie à Deux), with the 13 songs printed onto it. Based on the titles, it appears a few of the tracks will be covers of songs, like “That’s Entertainment” and “Gonna Build a Mountain.”
Check out the full tracklist below:
“Good Morning” - 2:46
“Get Happy” (2024) - 3:11
“Oh, When the Saints” - 3:42
“World on a String” - 2:37
“If My Friends Could See Me Now” - 2:41
“That’s Entertainment” - 4:09
“Smile” - 3:38
“The Joker” - 2:54
“Folie à Deux” - 2:58
“Gonna Build a Mountain” - 2:51
“Close to You” - 2:44
“Happy Mistake” - 4:05
“That’s Life” - 3:04
This will not be Lady Gaga’s next official solo studio album.
Although this release is being promoted solely under Gaga’s name, it will not serve as an official studio album, given that the Grammy-winner advertised it as a “companion” release.
On Gaga’s official website, the LP is described simply as the: “New album Harlequin from 13-time GRAMMY® and Academy Award® winner Lady Gaga.” Meanwhile, to promote the release, billboards were erected in New York and Los Angeles just a day prior, with messages that said: “LG 6.5” and “LG Six.Five.”
Another indication is that, back in early September, Gaga shared an image of an itinerary detailing her upcoming press events.
At the very bottom of the page, there was a line that read: “XX October: LG7 first single.” Thus, with the entire Harlequin album set to come out on September 27, it wouldn’t make much sense for the first single to arrive weeks later. This likely means that the promo for Gaga’s seventh studio album will follow soon after.
These will not be the same songs that feature in the Joker: Folie à Deux film.
As Gaga noted in her caption, the Harlequin LP will serve as a companion to the Joker: Folie à Deux soundtrack, meaning that these will not be the exact same songs that feature in the film.
Back in March, we learned that the movie is a jukebox musical, with at least 15 reinterpretations of “very well-known” songs, according to a report from Variety. As previously noted, there appear to be some covers listed on the Harlequin tracklist, meaning that there will likely be overlap. But overall, it seems this grouping of songs will function differently, and will all be sung by Gaga.
You can purchase the record as a vinyl, CD, or digital album.
For those Little Monsters with physical collections, Gaga has offered three different options to purchase Harlequin physically, as well as a digital option—all available to shop here.
On her official online store, the singer is offering fans the ability to buy an exclusive vinyl ($33) with unique cover art and silver-colored LP, while also offering a standard vinyl ($33), which features a candy red disk. Fans also have the option to purchase a CD ($14) or a digital album ($10).
