The eerie history behind Harry and Meghan's new home

It may be a sprawling property fit for a Duke and Duchess, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s new house has an eerie history behind it.

Frogmore Cottage, which will become the newlyweds’ home in the coming months, holds a special place in their hearts, with the couple even taking their engagement photos on the grounds of the Windsor estate.

However, it turns out they’re not the only ones who have been taken in by the charm of the countryside house, as it also holds a connection to another American divorcee, who caused mayhem in the royal family.

Wallis Simpson is buried there

Wallis Simpson, whose marriage to King Edward VIII subsequently caused his abdication from the throne, is buried in the grounds of Frogmore estate, alongside her husband.

Much like Meghan Markle, who was previously married before she tied the knot with Prince Harry, Wallis Simpson was a twice-divorced woman when Edward fell in love with her.

In 1936, Edward asked the British parliament for permission to marry Wallis but they declined.

Just a few weeks later, Edward married Wallis in France and gave up his title to Queen Elizabeth’s father, King George VI.

Wallis is famously quoted as calling Edward a ‘god-damned fool’ over his decision and the couple were given the titles of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, without the Her Royal Highness status.

The couple spent most of their years in France after being banished from England and shunned by the royal family.

Edward died in 1972 at the age of 77 and Wallis Simpson followed in 1986, at the age of 89. They are both buried in the Royal Burial Ground, beside Frogmore House.

New home for Harry and Meghan

Now, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly been gifted the house by the Queen, The Sun reports.

The property has a nursery for their new baby and ten bedrooms, compared to just two where they currently reside at Nottingham Cottage on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

There’s also thought to be space for a ‘gym and yoga studio’, something Meghan has previously said she loves to do.

However it’s not ready for them to move in straight away, as it’s currently divided into five separate units for palace staff to reside.

The house holds lots of sentiment for the pair, with Harry and Meghan hosting their evening wedding party there and it being the spot where they had their engagement photos taken.

“They need more room and hope Frogmore Cottage will be ready in time for when they have the baby,” a source told the publication.

Rift between brothers?

It’s also been claimed a motivation for the big change in plans was down to “tension” between Harry and his big brother William.

“There has been a bit of tension between the brothers,” the source said.

“Now Harry and Meghan don’t want to live next to William and Kate and want to strike out on their own.”

Sister-in-laws at war?

It’s also been claimed that a rift between Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton is the reason the royal newlyweds are eager to move away from Kensington Palace.

“Kate and Meghan are very different people. They don’t really get on,” a source told the Daily Mail.

But there’s little evidence to support the claims the two women ‘don’t get on’, royal biographer Duncan Larcombe told Yahoo UK.

“It would be a real shame to Harry and William if their wives don’t get on, but it’s quite a big leap of speculation,” says Duncan.

“There is no particular incident or occasion where they didn’t get on.

“It is a very broad claim to be making, and is likely just gossip from palace staff.”

However, he agreed the two women are very different. “They might both be pretty brunettes, but really that’s where the similarity ends,” he said.
