Dylan O'Brien recalls flopping his “Frozen 2 ”audition: 'It was really bad'

"I was already just nodding, going, 'Yeah, I know.'"

Dylan O'Brien is looking back at the time he got iced out of Frozen 2

The Saturday Night star recalled his failed audition for the 2019 animated film — in which Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel reprised their roles as sisters Anna and Elsa — while visiting Late Night With Seth Meyers on Friday.

When host Seth Meyers asked O'Brien if he'd had high hopes for landing the role, he admitted, "No, because I knew that I probably wasn't going to get it."

While the actor did not reveal which character he was auditioning for in the sequel, he reminded Meyers and the audience that the Frozen films are very much musicals and, as such, require performers with some serious pipes. "They're looking for multitalented, multi-hyphenate people who can act and sing," he explained. "And I didn't check, to be honest, probably either."

O'Brien, who is fully aware that he "can't sing," decided to audition for the part because he doesn't "always feel like a real actor," he said. In response, Meyers affirmed that O’Brien was very much a real actor before asking how long it took the casting director to realize that he couldn't sing.

"This poor woman," O’Brien replied, groaning. "I remember, actually — this is a specific detail — she asked me, painfully, if I could get to the chorus because she needed to see if I had a certain range."

The Maze Runner star, who had been "swimming in the first verse a little bit," fulfilled the woman's request. "And then I went higher, and it was really bad," he said. "I knew. She knew. It's okay."

"Did she know you knew?" Meyers asked.

There's a high chance she did. "I think so, because when she said to me, 'Okay, okay'... She said two 'okays.' I'll never forget it," O'Brien said. "And then she said, 'Thank you for coming in. I think we'd probably need a bit of a stronger singer,' and I was already just nodding, going, 'Yeah, I know.' I was like, 'Thanks for having me.'"

In the end, it was actually kind of a nice experience. "I honestly only remember it fondly," he said, before playfully adding, "And then I'm glad that's what they chose for you to ask me about."

Meyers joked, "We wanted you to have closure. Don't you see, Dylan?"

"It's made me comfortable, actually," O'Brien replied. "I'm serious!"
