Drew Barrymore wants 'another streaker' to crash this year's Oscars: 'It happened in the '70s!'
The actress was referencing the moment gay rights activist Robert Opel sprinted across the stage during David Niven's introduction at the 1974 Academy Awards.

Drew BarrymoreDrew Barrymore is ready for someone to bare more than just their heart at the 2025 Oscars.
During Friday’s episode of her eponymous talk show, Barrymore, Ross Mathews, and Entertainment Tonight cohosts Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner all took turns sharing what they wished would happen at this weekend’s star-studded ceremony.
“My Oscar wish is I always wish for another streaker as it happened in the ‘70s!” Barrymore said, turning to the camera and covering the side of her mouth with her hand as if telling a secret. “But I digress! My real Oscars wish is I’m really excited to see Conan O’Brien [host]. I think that was a really smart choice and I think he’s such a winning human being that I’m like, ‘Do this for a long time.’”

Barrymore isn’t lying — gallery owner and gay rights activist Robert Opel notoriously streaked across the stage at the 46th Academy Awards in 1974, flashing more than just a peace sign as he sprinted past David Niven during his introduction of Elizabeth Taylor.
"Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen,” Niven quipped through his own laughter after the incident. “But isn't it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?"
While there are suggestions that Opel's streaking may have been a preplanned bit, the moment has gone to become one of the most memorable moments in Oscars history. In fact, just last year, the Academy paid tribute to the 50th anniversary of his stripped-down sprint by having a seemingly nude John Cena present the award for Best Costume Design with only a large envelope covering his private parts.
“Costumes, they are so important,” Cena said at the event, drawing laughs as he shuffled awkwardly onstage. “Maybe the most important thing there is.”

Walt Disney Television executive Rob Mills later told Variety that Cena was sporting a pair of flesh-colored underwear during the bit to ensure that he didn’t accidentally present his own award to the audience.
“We made sure that, for all intents and purposes, he looked like a Ken doll up front.,” he added. “His crack was covered in the back and then the envelope was Velcro-ed on there so it wouldn’t fall. But beyond that, he was naked.”
As for if Barrymore will get her wish? Well, we'll all have to tune into the 2025 Oscars when it airs on Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. on ABC.
