Donald Trump showed some love to wife Melania Trump at his presidential inauguration—or at least he tried to!
As the 78-year-old took the stage Monday to be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States, he went to kiss his 54-year-old wife, but her large hat appeared to get in the way.
As Trump leaned in to peck the First Lady of the United States on the cheek, she moved her head forward, but her wide-brimmed navy hat seemingly prevented him from making contact.
The moment instantly became the talk of the internet, with many X (formerly Twitter) users posting video of the awkward encounter.

“Trump tried to kiss Melania but couldn’t because of her hat 🤣🤣🤣,” one wrote, while another said, “Melania DID NOT want to kiss Trump just then lmaoooo #Inauguration2025.”
One surmised that Trump was simply trying to not mess up Melania’s makeup. “Trump gives Melania an air-kiss as not to mess up her gorgeous look,” the X user said. “That’s respect.”
The air kiss wasn’t the only thing that turned heads at the presidential inauguration.

For her husband's big day, Melania wore a dark navy coat with a matching navy hat with a white stripe, dark navy heels and black gloves. The hat in particular seemed familiar to some people. Although some on X praised Melania's style as "stunning" and "classy," others pointed out the first lady resembled the McDonald's character Hamburglar.
Another outfit that shocked onlookers was the one worn by Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sánchez.
The 55-year-old journalist arrived alongside Bezos at the U.S. Capitol rotunda in Washington, D.C., for the historic swearing-in ceremony in all white. However, her outfit choice raised eyebrows.
Dressed in a white blazer buttoned at the waist, Sánchez sported a lacy white bustier underneath.

“Jeff Bezos future wife Lauren Sanchez is incredibly inappropriately dressed for a state occasion,” one X user wrote. “Someone should have told her that having her white lace bra out on display is not acceptable.”
Many prominent political figures—including Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris and more—were on hand as Trump became the 47th President of the United States. However, Michelle Obama was absent from the event.
Celebrities are also on hand to support Trump. Rapper Nelly is set to perform at the Liberty Inaugural Ball, one of three official balls celebrating Trump’s return to office. Other inaugural performers include Carrie Underwood and Billy Ray Cyrus.
